Clicking noise when turning.

Just a quick update after driving around for a month or so after my dealer appointment. They told me they checked everything but couldn't hear the noise, went to pick it up really excited to prove them wrong but the noise was gone.
I did let them know about tightening the bolts as you all discussed and I'm pretty sure they probably did but didn't want to admit anything.

So far so good!

Hi all I've been noticing a clicking noise that seems to be coming from the from driver side wheel well only when I turn right.

Unless it also happens when I turn right and I'm just not hearing it.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm probably going to take it into the dealer, feel like something isn't tightened and hoping it's not u joint already going bad.

So happy I finally found something about this, I have been searching for “popping sound driver side” at first I thought it was my seat but definitely not the seat and get worse as time goes on. It doesn’t seem to just be when turning like before, a quicker stop will do it too.

I wouldn't sweat the torque wrench. They are saying 33 ft/lbs for the lower ball joint nuts and I can tell you from first hand experience you need to go way past that.

I was finally able to remove the cotter pins and tighten down the upper and lower ball joints.

History: I went to the dealership and asked them to please inspect/tighten the upper and lower ball joints due to the said "clicking" sound. After a half an hour waiting at the dealership, they stated that the clicking was due to the lift kit I installed.

Not happy about their answer because I knew every nut and bolt that was on the lift kit..and I know I tightened everything to spec.

Friday, I took both wheels off in the driveway and removed the cotter pins. I could hand loosen the upper's and semi hand loosen the bottoms.
I tightened them all and installed new cotter pins.

Not only has the clicking gone away, the "loose" handling while driving the interstate is 100% gone. Why on earth are so many ball joints loose for Jeepers. Needless to say I'll be contacting the service department manager to explain the situation.

You should file a complaint with the NHTSA. This problem seems widespread and a possible safety issue. Maybe it will force a recall.

I have tighten them again this morning to the second slots on the nut for the cotterpin to go true, and still clicking when turning.. i am calling the dealership tomorrow. It is sad to pay so much money for a vehicle and have problem at under 1k . Did you guys tighten more than two slots? I dont want to strip the treads it seems really tight. Tanks

JLUS here with no clicking noises, but after reading some of these posts I decided to check my lower BJ's. They were nowhere near 33 ft lbs, I went one notch tighter on both. I'll be checking the uppers soon.

I saw the foot pounds that they were supposed to be torqued to and that is nowhere near enough in my opinion. I tighten them down really hard. with that being said I'm curious to see what your dealership says.

Went to the dealership today, all 4 (upper & lower) ball joint’s nuts were tightened and new cotter pins installed. Clicking is now gone and I’m a happy camper.

i'll have the dealer check the ball joints just in case... i figured it was normal for 4 low

Hello to all again. I just got my Jeep back from the dealer. I posted a video to the thread earlier about how I attempted to tighten my own ball joints, but I was nervous to really crank down on them, and after some time, a clicking noise would pop up for a click every once in a while. So I ended up caving and taking it to the dealer.

Here are the results: they replaced all four front ball joints. The tech said potentially by not having them tightened, they were prone to premature wear, and the best course of action to prevent replacement in the future (which would be at my cost if its out of warranty) was to just replace them. He said the ball joints when ordered from the factory came in a package with an upper and lower together with castle nuts and cotter pins, so he ordered two sets and installed them today. He also said he tightened them down a little more than Spec, so to prevent the new ball joints from clicking.

I have included a picture of my work order as well as the ball joint installation instructions my technician recieved, so you guys can show these to your service agents if they try to rebutle your problem with the excuse “it’s a jeep thing.”
