If you plan on doing some big events like Easter jeep safari and a few others still use CB and most likely won’t change.

This is a good reason to keep a CB setup if you already have one, but I think they will switch to GMRS at some point. Jeep Jamboree already made the switch and most new off-roaders are starting with a handheld GMRS for its simplicity, and handheld is often all you need for a trail run.

You’d think but I just talked to someone who helped run that event and was told nope—they have no intention of switching anytime in the future. With having such a large group all over the area they’re staying with CB’s. Who knows maybe that’ll change down the road but for at least two big events I know if they’re staying with cb’s. Be nice if they change but I’ve known people, like myself, having to add in a CB for those events.

Good to know! Maybe they’ll make the change if they get a nice sponsorship from Midland Radio…. That’s likely what happened with Jeep Jamboree.

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
I think they'll change at some point.

GMRS is a better technology and becoming much more prevalent. Other events/organizers are requiring GMRS, and people aren't going to buy both. You can buy GMRS radios at Walmart, a hardware store, Costco, just about anywhere, and it's pretty inexpensive, especially for handhelds.

There's really no reason to buy a CB radio, except maybe Jeep Safari. Everyone else will be using GMRS in short-order.

EJS, trail hero, and winter 4x4 all require CB
I also heard that the guides are older and won’t change. Maybe eventually there will be enough to convince the change but from what I’ve heard it doesn’t sound like any time soon

Don’t blame the old timers for not wanting to change. I’m relatively young and don’t like changing so I imagine it’s only going to get worse! ?

I still think at some point CB’s will go the way of the dinosaur… it just sounds like it may take several years for these events to catch up. Best bet, Midland gives them a bunch of money to switch to GMRS sooner.

Don’t forget to get your GMRS license from the FCC, it’s required. No test, reasonable fee.

Thanks for all the replies. I will probably go with the Midland MXT275...just not sure what I want to do about the antenna. I already have that CoolTech kit for my CB radio, and love it. I don't want to get rid of the CB as I still use it for highway traffic….even though that is dying off too.

I guess I will keep scouring the interwebs until I come across an antenna mount I can live with.

Would there be any issues having a CB and GMRS antenna next to each other out the back? Or the coax ran next to each other? Not sure if that would cause any interference or not. My initial search says it won’t but ??‍♂

That’s just like my CB.
The only thing I don’t like is that most GMRS antennas I have seen have been ran to the drivers side cowl area. Seems to be a bad area to me…I am not sure how it compares to a CB antenna.
Here was my solution.

The 6db antenna mounted there perfectly matches the FM antenna on the other side. I have no problem hitting LOS repeaters out to about 40 miles - my swr is .05 to .07 through the whole gmrs band. The orientation of Jeep doesn't seem to matter at all - ie: having a ground plane or not. Radio checks come back 5x5 no matter which way I'm facing....

I was interested in that solution, but scared the waves bouncing around would ruin my already tarnished Kentucky brain ?
Lol, you'll be fine, the roll bar blocks about as much as the A-pillar up front. Plus most people only talk briefly on the radio, hopefully your not reading the Good Book to everyone with your head pressed up against the antenna.

That's a nice antenna location. I've been struggling with the same. I was considering the next bolt forward of where you mounted or even a lip mount for under the hood.
