Since that was a less than polite comment, I will actually ask it in the form of a question...

@CoolTech can you address the ground plane concern?

Isn't the tailgate aluminum and magnesium? If so, will that be an issue, or no?

Good Reading here:
https://www.wearecb.com/cb-antenna-ground-plane.html

Just one site, but I think its the antenna here that matters:
https://www.rightchannelradios.com/collections/no-ground-plane-cb-antennas

And I do understand ground planes, but I need trail communication mainly, so its not a long distance. I do want to prevent damage to my radio though.
I mounted my antenna on my JK on the corner, in the license plate frame. It isn't great. My buddy mounted his on a spare tire carrier mount. I'm sure it isn't much better, but it is a heck of alot better than my JK setup. On the JL, I'm looking for something like that, on the tailgate or near the spare tire mount.

And/or an aftermarket metal bumper if I sort of try to see the Jeeps in his avatar.

Hi guys from Cooltech.

How about this idea - create a mount that attaches to these two bolts in the front. Design it such that it would be attached to the driver side, with the antenna mounting closer to the front bolt, i.e. as far forward as possible.

Advantages of this location would be
  • Better reception since the antenna sits higher and further removed from the chassis
  • Shorter antenna cable
  • Does not interfere with customization in the back, e.g. tire carrier etc
Of course you would have to include longer replacement bolts (use TORX), and distancers so that the mount does not touch the chassis. Add the ability to attach a search light and you should have a winner.

I would be your first customer!

I’m no expert but isn’t a properly tuned cb based upon certain wire and antenna length? Something to do with the length of the radio waves?

Also regarding the ground plane talk above, couldn’t you apply an appropriate ground strap from that mount to the chassis/frame ground to achieve proper grounding?
