Thanks for everyone’s input. Decisions to be made but I think building my own is the way to go.

I’m looking at buying a used JL or JT and I see a lot that have already been modded that I like but I’m leery about used lift kits. I can either find one unmodded around $30k and throw $8k at it or find one around $38k that has a lot more than $8k in mods already done to it. What experience do yall have buying used already modded and any recommendations appreciated? I’m in southeast Texas and would really be on beaches, trailers and mud but not a lot of rock climbing. If I do the build myself it would most likely be Metal cloak 3.5 mid arm true dual with 35’s to start. It will also be my daily and I drive 60 miles round trip daily. Thanks ahead of time.
Many are scared of modded vehicles, but some of my best cars were already built when I bought them. It really depends on what you're looking for. Quality parts are not cheap, so you can save a fortune on the right one. A good visual inspection underneath and a Carfax will tell you everything you need to know.

Exactly and you have to figure out what they are after you buy it. It just sounds nice getting a head start on a build.

I'm on my 3rd Jeep and the previous two were modified with quality parts, done by a very good shop. I went offroad a lot but I didn't abuse them. Whoever bought those two got a good deal.

Be very careful but great deals can be found.

I found my unicorn this summer. Only 5k miles on it, drives better than stock with 40's. By my math he sunk almost as much as the the original purchase price into it. But typical to used Jeep shopping I did look a quite a few duds.

Most of my Jeeps were bought new but I have bought two that were used with mods. Both times they were modified with quality parts, never or slightly used off-road, and both ended up being an incredible deal (basically getting the mods for free). As others have said, check the brand of the mods, receipts if you can, and crawl under to look for dents and scratches.

YJ bought from a guy that made it "fancy" like this for his daughter to drive to High School. Never even had it in 4wd. I put over 200K miles on it after buying it and never had any issues.

This JLUR had 7K miles, Falcon shocks, Teraflex lift and tire carrier, Nexus stabilizer, Injen CAI and exhaust, 392 wheels, and ceramic coat. It was thousands below the MSRP of a new one. 67K miles on it now and going strong.

I have traded in or sold off modded vehicles from sports cars, motorcycles, and off road rigs. None of which ever were someones headache as you will sometimes find out there.
Someone else mentioned, if it cheaply modded, pass on it. But if there are quality add ons and it suits your style/build list, why not?

All my vehicles, even my race bikes were meticulously taken care of, none were sold off with any issues. My last 2 rigs had mostly off road miles, spent a lot of time on obstacles, but no issues. If I had a younger brother or another relative, I would have no issue selling any of my vehicles off to them.

My current 392, if there ever is a day I get rid of it, someone will get a great deal with a pretty lengthy list of quality parts, for those that pass it up due to it being modded.... it's there loss.

One of the ones I was looking at is a wrangler with a 7 1/2 inch lift. Anyone ever driven one that tall as a daily? Here is the build sheet. It looks great but 7.5 inches …

You will be better off to find a non-modded Wrangler. Then drive it as is for a while and then decide which mods are right for you. Next find a qualified 4X4 Jeep shop and then go for it.

Buy new and mod. If it is too much money, then take the plunge I guess. Get something that was moded with quality parts, should be ok if it was done right. You can easily see if the Jeep was heavily used offroad. Check the skid plates and rock sliders, they should have scratches all over and dents. If not, it was a pavement princess. But even then it isn't a deal breaker on a low mileage vehicle if you find the right one.

Can you show us a picture of that Jeep with the 7 1/2" lift? I can't imagine a JL with a 7 1/2" lift and 37s. My 4-door JL has a 4 1/2" lift and it looks like it has too much lift for 40s.

Also, what are the new prices of those parts that have been added? That Jeep is 6 years old, so the parts on it should definitely be considered used parts. My general rule of thumb when selling high quality used parts is that they are worth half the price of the same part when purchased new.

I think you are being taken to the cleaners on this one.
