I am planning on ordering a JLUR Recon. The vehicle comes with 'plastic' bumpers. I want to upgrade to larger tires but this means I have to order the more expensive steel bumpers along with the tailgate reinforcement option. So I might as well order an 'add-on' set of steel bumpers with a tire carrier. But this means that the OEM backup radars will have to be shut off and the camera replaced. It appears that I will be paying a couple of thousand dollars for OEM parts that I will not be able to use.
Am I right?

Getting a Recon? How long is the wait time on that? Just speculating but I bet you don’t see D1 status for 2-5 years.

He probably meant Rubicon.

Are there any pictures of the "Steel" rear bumper yet? Or is it the same as previous production models?

Not sure what OP meant. Said JLUR Recon. As most of you know R in JLUR means rubicon. So... That being said if you really are planning on ordering a Recon, as mentioned it will be a while since no special editions have been mentioned. And when it does, I am pretty sure it will come with metal bumpers. BIG unless, you're overseas.

Anyway, yes the metal bumpers have been seen. On most of the JLs tested in NZ. Look for the bolt heads towards the end caps. Overall it looks similar to current metal bumper. Haven't been able to tell if rears are metal though.

In any case, to the OP, I can only imagine aftermarket companies trying to allow reuse of factory safety systems. Maybe not all. But it probably will just take some preorder confirmation on your part. If not specifically stated in description.

It depends on what bumpers you upgrade to. A cheap ebay bumper may not have mounting points for rear cameras or radar sensors but it's too early to tell right now. I'm sure the good aftermarket bumpers and tire carriers will have mounts or cutouts for the factory bumper gizmos. The stuff will probably roll out slowly, getting better as the years go by. I would guess companies like AEV and Bestop work with the manufacturers and would probably have the factory systems in place.

What is the benefit of the mopar steel bumpers over the plastic JLU ones? They look the same to me. Is it just the capability of mounting a winch? I've scraped the bottom of my plastic bumpers and it doesn't look too noticeable. I imagine if I did that to the mopar ones I would be having to touch up with paint.

Those bumpers in that shoot reminds me of previous TJ steel bumper with plastic "end caps" attached. I was hoping for something along the line of what was used on the Mopar 10th or at least AEV tire carrier compatible.

1. They are steel
2. You can mount a winch
3. You can remove the end caps for larger tires

Yep...I originally was planning on getting a 2017-18 JKUR Recon and my typing sort of slipped. I know that only the JL Rubicon will be available at the high end of the line for quite a while. I found out that the 2018 JL rear radar system is part of the rear light assembly. It is sensitive enough to go off if you have a trailer ball in the receiver; the tow package wiring automatically shuts off the rear radar if you plug in a trailer. So if I put on a bumper tire carrier...the radar system will be useless (money down the drain).
I was also worried just how strong the 'plastic' OEM front bumper will be. FAC states that you will be able to install a winch on it. But I wonder
what will happen when you put a 12,000 lb winch on it with a double line back to a tow hook. I would much rather have a D-Ring attached to a welded steel bumper than a bent piece of steel.
I guess I will go out and search for a JKUR, even if it doesn't have all of the 'improvements' of a JL. And time will only tell if Jeep has fixed the OEM problems such as water leakage that has plagued a lot of JKs.
