I encourage you to do your homework before buying hardware for use with JSCAN.

Spend the $ and get a decent hardware set-up. You will benefit from a decent set-up and someday when you sell that JL, you will be able to resell this hardware and recoop much of the $ you spent on it.

Anyway, No way today, in 2024, would I ever recommend anyone buying, an old school, clunky, large footprint, outdated, iffy 12+8 cable.

Guys/gals that have a clue these days.... and are buying hardware, go with a dedicated security gateway bypass module. You can buy one from ZAutomotive ... https://www.amazon.com/Z-Automotive-SGW-Bypass-module/dp/B0B7W42YR1/ref=sr_1_2?crid=PYBDBW8U8IH2&keywords=z+automotive+security+gateway+bypass+module&qid=1704719957&sprefix=z+automotive+securuty,aps,93&sr=8-2&ufe=app_do:amzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840

or save a few $ and buy one from ECRI. https://ecri.app/products/ecri-secu...OgRhPDv9fRE2FfWLyBfbmjcqYb0uIWDikTq11iP0NLJZY

Also, do consider buying a Security Gateway Extension Cable..

and these products above will serve both as a diagnostic tool and can clear codes like the ones mentioned earlier in the thread, correct?

Yes, they will.

By the way ... Even the Polish guy (he told me in a message) that developed JSCAN/brings us JSCAN, uses a dedicated security bypass module and not an old school Chrysler 8+1 cable.

You will also need a Bluetooth scan tool. You would want one highly recommended by JSCAN for use with JSCAN and a JL. Read here: http://jscan.net/supported-and-not-supported-obd-adapters/

The OBDLink MX+ is lets say the pick of the litter, but is a bit expensive. For those that want to spend less and still have a terrific tool, highly recommended by JSCAN for use with JSCAN and JL, the Vlinker is an excellent choice.

@roaniecowpony

The two cables you disconnect from the security gateway, plug into the ECRI security gateway bypass module. The ECRI does security gateway bypass duty.

You need to bypass the security gateway on the JL/JT in order to make changes/clear codes with a scan tool, whether that scan tool is wired or bluetooth/wireless.

The Bluetooth scan tool plugs into the OBDll port.

As for the Security Gateway Extension Cable, read here and you will see how it comes into play...

So, I'm outside of warranty. I have a bluetooth dongle that I leave connected all the time, along with the 12-8 bypass harness, so I can access the JL systems without any gymnastics.

What would buying an ECRI and the SB extension do for me?

Using JSCAN

@roaniecowpony

You already have a Chrysler 8+1 cable ... My posts are to encourage guys/gals that are today, buying the hardware to use with JSCAN and a JL/JT....... to buy the most practical, the most current hardware available. Hardware that can also be easily resold some day. Also.... the ECRI can be left in place and has little physical footprint. You just easily remove it when you go to a dealer for service.

For you... You already have hardware. Yes, old school way but it works.

You have to deal with a clunky Chrysler cable dangling.. that cable is known to fail after it is bent/manipulated lots... IF/when you go to the dealer you have to deal with the SGW and reconnect it /remove the Chrysler cables. This is a workout in the dark/ on the side of the road or whatever.

With an ECRI and an extension cable, it takes literally 30 seconds to have the JL in a form that the dealer can deal with lets say.

Anyway, you might just stick with what you have already. Your choice ... it does works but is outdated lets say...

Since you already have the 12+8, nothing would be gained. I had the ECRI and the extension cables which allowed me to save my fingers from trying to remove the OEM cables from the SGW to make the changes.

Either way works, but if you have not invested, then these are the things to buy for JSCAN:

Z Automotive SGW Bypass - https://www.amazon.com/Z-Automotive-SGW-Bypass-module/dp/B0B7W42YR1

Z Automotive SGW Extension Cable - https://www.amazon.com/Z-Automotive-Z_SGW_EXT/dp/B0B7VR6W1F

OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner - https://www.amazon.com/OBDLink-Bluetooth-Professional-Grade-Diagnostic-Performance/dp/B07JFRFJG6

JSCAN License - https://jscan.net/licenses/ (buy from phone)

i’ve searched threads regarding brake fluid flushing however the majority of what i’ve read is that you need a scanner when flushing the jl due to abs. have others been successful flushing without having trouble with the abs? i have a motive bleeder with appropriate cap and would like to try (no scanner). TIA
Anyone with a JL should really do an ABS bleed. The factory didn't do a good job of this. Most JLs have a soft/mushy pedal. Mine would go almost to the floor if I held it down with heavy force. After I did a thorough ABS bleed, the pedal was high and firm.

But the JL is aging and brakes should be flushed regularly, to get water and debris out. Or you can simply replace your master and wheel calipers when they fail.

There are a lot of code reader/clearing devices that can activte the ABS bleed routine. Taser and JSCAN do this. I think there's an Autel device for under $100 that does it as well. I used JSCAN.

JSCAN is a phone app and it gives you instructions as you do the procedure. I found it very easy to follow. It gave instruction as to when to bleed a particular wheel position, while the ABS pump was activated. You bleed each wheel just like bleeding without ABS.

Since I had installed Teraflex Delta brakes, they are equipped with speed bleders that have a check valve, so you don't need two people to perform the bleed. Just open the bleeder a turn, with a hose attached and a catch bottle, and start pumping. Pump until you tire or the reservoir gets low or you're satisfied you've eliminated air. Then move to the next position following the JSCAN prompt. If you don't have speed bleeders, get some.

What's the setting in the Tazer to do this, I must've missed it!

@Rhinebeck01 or @CarbonSteel since it sounds like you've done this before, could one of you help me summarize the process?

I'd like to be able to perform an ABS bleed myself. I don't have anything yet.

It sounds like I should purchase:
1) Security GateWay (SGW) Extension cable ($32)
Amazon.com: Z Automotive SGW Extension Cable - Compatible with: Gladiator 2020+/Wrangler 2018+/Ram 1500 2019+/RAM TRX 2021+ : Automotive

2) Z Automotive Security GateWay (SGW) Bypass ($69)
Amazon.com: Z Automotive Security Gateway Bypass Compatible with: Dodge Durango/Jeep Grand Cherokee 2018+ALL FCA VEHICLES INCLUDING FCA Platforms : Automotive

3) Bluetooth ODB2 connector ($140)
Amazon.com: OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner for iPhone, Android, and Windows : Automotive

4) Jscan app for phone
JScan – OBD JScan – Mobile Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge Diagnostic Tool

I think the steps then are:
1) Remove factory cables from the Security GateWay (SGW) module
2) Plug the SGW Extension into the SGW module
3) Plug the SGW Bypass into the SGW Extension ? <-- is this right?
4) Plug the Bluetooth ODB2 connector into the ODB2 port
5) Connect with Jscan

Once the ABS bleed has been completed what can I, or should I remove?

Thanks for your patience and any details you can provide!

You have it down!

I would remove the SGW bypass and connect the extension wires into each other.

You will be good at that point.

I already have all of this,
SGW Extension
ECRI
Bluetooth ODB2
Jscan

So, if I'm reading this right; I can't just bleed the brakes on my JL Wrangler like I've done on my other vehicles for the past 60 years?

Correct...unless you want air left in the lines.

You have to use JSCAN to execute the ABS bleed procedure. The ABS module valves will not open without it and air will remain trapped.

Brake fluid, a buddy to operate the brake pedal (make sure that person is not deaf as they need to listen to you), one or two wrenches, some hose and a bottle (I still have an old glass snapple bottle with three different sized hoses shoved in it). After that do just the old fashioned brake bleed when it comes to flushing. Jeep is nothing special. I do it all of the time.

I even do the same thing in racing with a Bosch Motorsport ABS system and we even have the cable plus software to do a bleed for the ABS unit itself. Yet that only happens when things like, (you tear a corner off the car and brake fluid pukes itself all over the place and the ABS unit does dry on a channel). I have done it on certain cars where people do the Carolina Squat, then off road. Pop and axle and it rips the brake line off.

As for a flush, old school works.

As for a MC or changing a corner, if you attack the job smartly, then you can keep the ABS unit with no air or dry. Been doing it this way since 1980 (yes, ABS did exist back then).

those are the right tools for the job and those are the right people to ask. that being said, there are cheaper tools that are poo pooed by Rhinebeck01. this can be done with vlinker mc+ bluetooth obd 2 reader ($60 amazon), Jscan license ($21) and a 12+8 cable ($16? amazon). keep in mind, i would never do anything like this without the security gate extension cable you referenced ($32 amazon).
Rhinebeck01 has stated above that this is the clunky and outdated way i believe iirc but theoretically will allow you to access the same abs function.
i don’t think the exact sequence of buttons to press within the app have been delineated but it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out.
once the bleed is complete, you can leave the extension in place and keep the bypass plugged into the two lines from the jeep that originally plugged into security gateway. you would disconnect the bypass and plug the two jeep lines into the extension cables if/when taking to the dealership.
if you complete the job then let us know how it went!
