This is only a half-serious comment: I noticed when I remove my Sahara's hard-top, anecdotally, I seem to gain 0.5 average MPG. I usually leave my Freedom panels on (I'm already too dark and handsome). I wonder if the swirling air in the back makes a more slippery aerodynamic shape overall.
With any "serious" aero-device on the hard-top, I would expect to look like those old-skool rear deflectors, and work to create a smaller wake, re-directing air-flow toward the ground.
