What is the best option to mount a roof top tent available in 2024? I have a Roofnest Falcon 2 and I’m considering getting Rhino Rack Backbone system with Rhino Vortex RCL crossbars and legs. Here are my top priorities:

  • Low profile as I want to be able to use my garage with RTT on the Jeep
  • I want to be able to remove the RTT relatively easy, going to build a ceiling hoist in my garage.
  • Want to be able to pull the hardtop and go topless/soft top relatively easy
  • Cut down the wind noise as much as possible
  • Need to be able to still hit some moderate trails

I think it is possible to pull the RTT together with Rhino RCL crossbars just by removing six bolts from the Rhino backbone legs, correct?
What do you guys think? Is this a good solution or maybe I should go with something different? I’ve heard about Maximus 3 system but I believe it makes pulling the hardtop much harder and it only comes with Rhino Pioneer platform and not with crossbars, correct?

Read here and the other thread I listed in this thread. I have run both Rhino Rack and Exposed Racks. Much prefer the Exposed Racks.

Hmm, why do you prefer Exposed Racks over Rhino Backbone? I have my RTT installed on a Deezee rack, I've been using it for two years now and never had any problems. The reason I went with Deezee back then was I didn't want to drill holes in my brand new hardtop. The thing is with a rack attached only to the rain gutters somehow I'm always concerned about it either on a trail whenever I'm off camber or whilst running on a highway in windy conditions. Probably I would have the same discomfort with Exposed Racks.

I prefer it for ease of use and taking the top on/off. Rhino Rack I had the Maximus-3 setup with the RR platform. Once it was on I never took ,my top off again due to the time it would take to do so. We do trails rated 3-4 with it on but nothing crazy really. No issues with wind at all.

Oh, Maximus 3 with Rhino Pioneer Platform makes no sense. Not only Maximus legs are pain to remove but also adding a bunch of extra weight with Pioneer platform only to put a RTT on it is crazy. That's why I wanna use crossbars instead of the platform :)

Do you have a really tall garage door opening? Does the tent you're getting have an extremely low profile?
It's not really tall hence why I got Roofnest Falcon 2 as this is one of the slimmest rooftop tents out there. With my current Deezee rack I'm right on the money and can't go any higher than that. That's 9.5 inches of total height between RTT and the rack :)

I carried a 180lb smittybilt xl tent on Deezee rack for 18+months across many trails. The tracks held up good all along. When i traded in the Jeep, there was no damage to the gutter or paint anywhere (i lined the paint contact points with rubber tape)

With only 3.5" added to overall height, it's hard to find another option that sits lower. There are hard shell tents that are directly installed to the rhino backbone pegs.. Seen that somewhere on the forum, not sure about the brand

I have the rhino backbone with vortex bars and it’s extremely solid. We take our Jeep over anything and everything. Very happy with the system. Relatively easy to remove, very little noise. From the roof to the top of the vortex bars is 2.75”
