Based on what metrics? The only metric that comes to mind where it's not dead last is mileage compared to a 392.
Best on metrics of "all round". It's just a good reliable engine and does what it needs to do for the JL. It's a good balance for on-road and off-road. Not too nose heavy and smooth powerband. If one needs more power (the 3.6 is fine) just put in 4:56 or better.

Here's my 3.6L metric as it sits today.

Every engine has it's issues - and your picture proves nothing is perfect. With over 10 million+ engines produced the 3.6L has done well in a variety of vehicle platforms. All the other engines, including the mighty 6.4L have had the wrench too. Hope you get yours fixed and on the road again...or.... maybe get that 426 from AMW4X4. Cheers.

I went with the 3.6, 8 speed auto, E-torque and 4.56 gears. I am satisfied with its performance 95% of the time. If the 392 were not an additional $25k….. Maybe I would have considered it.

All of the pollution control crap on the diesel makes it a non starter for me. I would have loved it.

Just the same, it's my metric. Probability of occurence is 1:1. Others that haven't had the issue can put it in a different probability range. Not me.

Im going with proven track record vs number of 3.6 built and on the road. Parts availability is nice too. Here’s one of my 14 metrics. This is my “NEW” work van. Last one threw a rod at 243,000 miles. There’s at least another 50K left in this one. 2017 caravan GT w/3.6

Sounds good, but the world is bigger than just you.

I’ve really enjoy my diesel. All around work horse of a motor.

The emissions are what they are. My experience has been one that all I notice is the smile on my face as the diesel tractors past obstacles and cruises down the highway!

That makes it the best engine for off roading? Because it works so well in your work van?

Im pretty sure i outlined, why i chose this engine, while replying to a thread ”BEST ENGINE FOR INTENDED PURPOSE”
Stated my opinion just like everyone else has, so far.. Opinions are generally derived from experiences…. Just sharing mine Regarding the 3.6 regardless of the body surrounding it, same engine.

most well known of the choices.
most common
most parts availability
pretty simple design in comparison to the 2.0 and 3.0
obviously from my experiences, high mileage isn’t an issue

OP clearly stated in the original post:
Which is the best for off-roading?
I most have missed where he asked which engine works best in a work van. I concede that the 3.6 wins hands down in that arena.

Ok. Which engine is best for off-roading? What is your experience with ALL of the available power plants? Why do you argue so hard against the 3.6?

OP clearly stated in the TITLE as well. Isn’t the Title of a post where you give direction of a post?

You’ve offered nothing But arguments. No insight, No personal experiences, nothing.
