I put mine here and seems sturdy enough just added some washers to secure it on the flexible rubber/plastic. I did have to use one of the extra black wires that came with it and just wrapped it with red tape.

Ok like this, helps I have the same winch and disconnect. Thanks for posting. I’ve trying to figure out how and where I was going to install that.

Are you using the positive or negative cable for this switch? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but I’ve been getting mixed opinions on whether to use positive or negative

The positive cable is what I hooked it to but due to needing more length (no comments) I used one of the spare black cables wrapped in red tape so it is obvious it is a positive wire to make the distance needed.

Interesting, you got me thinking now. I thought you were questioning because of my wire coloring stuff but after thinking you may be asked if I put it on the positive or negative side. I did a quick google search and it sounds like that is a controversial question. I believe I actually followed the directions and that is why I put it on the positive side. I have also normally seen them on the positiveside of the battery but I can understand reasons for both the positive or negative side. I plan to keep it on the positive side and in my opinion in this setup that is better because their Is a negative post exposed close to the grill that could be contacted with a tool causing some on off surges and possibly problems. That may be a lame justification but it works for me and I don’t see a reason to switch anyway.

The disconnect on the positive line is the correct setup. The whole point is to keep a live pos wire from grounding out after becoming compromised in some fashion - an accident, chafed insulation etc...

That is also why you want it as close to the battery terminal as possible - so the majority of the line is 'disconected' unless in use.

thank you for the clarification. I’ve seen them hooked up both ways.

Posts like this have been on off road forums for 20+ years. And all I would say is that when I was hooking a winch directly to a battery, that vehicle didn’t have airbags or seatbelts, there wasn’t trigger locks or safes for guns etc.

Not going to debate whether we are in a better place now. But…

Depending on how you install you should have maybe 2 disconnects. If you are installing with a switch at your battery you should have a quick disconnect at the winch. The switch is for others (emergency personnel etc) safety and the quick disconnect is for your safety.

Having a 400+ amp device on the front of your vehicle and getting into a front end collision is a risk to emergency personnel. They are going to still help you, but it is nice for you to have thought about their safety and have your winch disconnected.

When you are winching, you definitely need a way to cut The power quick!!! If your switch is close to the front/you, then that is all you need. if it is under the hood by the battery it is not close enough. Your winch solenoid can get stuck on and crush you or damage your rig and what you are winching.

So do what you want, but if I come upon a jeep w/winch involved in an accident, I won’t touch it because I know most don’t take the time to install a simple switch or relay…. Sadly until someone “mandates“ it, it won’t happen.

Hi Ernie, do you remember the reasons folks recommend breaking the negative side instead of the positive side?
Thanks,
JJ

Honestly I just remember stumbling across a couple you tube videos with guys saying never put a disconnect in the positive side. I think they were working with a different application though. Trailer home or even a boat maybe. It was a while ago
