At what size tire is something like that required? As I understand hydraulic steering is a must at 40" tires. Do 37"s need a steering boost? Jeep does get wheeled a handful of times a year.

I got the boost when I had my stock 35's but mainly for the power steering fluid cooler because my power steering kept overheating off-road. I got their hydraulic ram when I went to my 40's. They both really helped, though I haven't been off-road yet with their ram so I can't say anything about that.

I think it depends on what type of terrain you wheel. I didn't need it when I was running 37"s. But I was on hunting trails.
We normally wheel trails with large sections of rocks. I added it before our first trip, and it helped quite a bit.

I wore a set of 35s out without the boost kit. At times in big rocks, steering force was challenged. I went to 37s and definitely felt more times I couldn't move the tires. All issues solved with the boost kit. Recommend if you are rocks and don't need to be reminded of the old days with power assist and big steering wheels.

Thanks. I just made the switch to 37"s and it had me thinking. I have two wheeling trips planned within the next month, one more woodsy driving and one on rocks.

I did Moab and overheated the steering. No power steering on a Moab trail made it "interesting"!!! Now have the APEX unit but haven't really stressed it, not running full pressure yet either. I'm on 37's too.

I was going to post a question on this, glad I found this thread, and glad to see others have done it with 35s which is what I run. Ive been in a few situations where Ive not been able to steer against a rock or been in a deep rut I cant steer out of. Glad to know others have done it and liked it. It will be my next upgrade! I didnt want it to be a waste.

The steering "boost" kit is nothing more than a spring to add pressure, a gauge to tell how much pressure you are actually adjusting to, and a marginally effective cooler. I installed the Apex "boost" kit a couple years ago. It definitely helps with 37s. But it will not let you turn when against a rock or even in certain situations where you want to turn. It's a good interim step in helping the steering with a relatively easy install.

Hardcore rock guys on 37s or larger and all HD steering components will want to go right to a cylinder assisted system of one configuration or another. There are cylinder assisted systems that port the OEM steering box and retain the electric pump, cylinder assist systems that use aftermarket steering boxes, whil retaining the electric pump, and finally, there are full systems that eliminate the electric pump and add a mechanical belt driven pump and HD steering box and cylinder.

I had it installed recently and for my use case (so far, going wheeling in two weeks) it has shown to be effective even on street use. When the pavement warms up as do the tires, it was difficult to turn the steering wheel and get movement out of the steering system. It feels like I have power steering again. For me, it was worth it. I'm not a hardcore crawler but wheel approximately 8 times a year on rocks.
