Not legal in california.

Have not done offroad because id like to keep my teeth intact.
So you can ride a motorcycle in California without a helmet, but you can't fold the windshield down on a Jeep? Yeah, that sounds like Cali logic.

If you ever change your front speakers, then you will love dropping the windshield, KEEP IT!

You can't ride a motorcycle on a public road without a helmet (VC 27803) You can't even ride a bicycle with an electric motor without a helmet.

really?

what exactly is the section of the Vehicle Code you think this is supposed to be in violation of?
I didn't find anything addressing folding down a windshield. CVC just requires the vehicle to be " shall be equipped with an adequate windshield. " . Still, is it "...an adequate windshield" if it's folded down? I think you'd loose fighting a ticket if it went before a judge. As they say: the public doesn't get to interpret law. That is only for the courts. Codes Display Text (ca.gov)

Subaru's windshield doesn't fold. Really!!! This is a feature that separates Jeep from all other crap out there.
Wow. Next the 4 wheel drive will become a pain. Can't believe some of this. There's true Jeep blood then there's people who bought a Jeep to drive as a regular car....which it's NOT!
Actually, a Subaru windshield DOES fold. It just doesn't fold back up again.

Although the Jeep had a folding windshield to make it meet a shipping height spec for the Army, it hasn't just been Jeeps that windshields folded on. Over the years, there have been a number of vehicles that had that feature. Here's some.

  • 1st Gen Bronco's could fold the windshield.
  • The Suzuki Samurai had a fold down windshield over 30 years ago.
  • The Suzuki Samurai: History, Generations, Models (motortrend.com)
  • The Toyota Land Cruiser had a folding windshield at least 50 years ago.
  • The VW "Thing" had a folding windshield in the 70s.
  • I believe at least the older G-wagons had a folding windshield. I doubt it folds on a new one, and you'd have to be nuts to fold it on such a vehicle anyway.

And now how many still fold. We keep whining about a Jeep being a Jeep it will just turn into all the other boring appliance vehicles on the road.

The TJ was the last Jeep that looked right with a folded windshield. The JK looked bad with the curved windshield on the hood. The JL has the full cage painted the color of the body and there is no profile change when folded, so it ruins the effect.

The original military Jeeps had folding windshields not only for shipping but also to clear larger weapon systems like recoilless rifles. Also, a folded windshield reduces reflections which can catch the enemy’s eye. Covering a folded windshield kept the glare from being spotted by aircraft.

Yup! I try to at least one weekend a year. I’ve been fully naked since Halloween. Gotta love this time of year in AZ!

I'd kill for this type of weather in Atlanta this time of year.

For those of you who do... how does this affect visibility/sightlines when 4X4? Seems like it would be worse?

You do know it's gonna be 75 degrees and sunny here today right?

I'm probably gonna put my soft top on tonight. High 50s to low 60s is my favorite top-down weather.

Yes.... But this type of weather is the exception and not the rule here. We just had low/highs from 30s to 50s last week with that same range coming back next week. I was thinking form the OPs post the weather he's experiencing in AZ right now is typical for the season and not just an uncommon couple of days.

By the way, if you're in Atlanta, I'd like to meet a few fellow Jeepers. Never taken mine off road and would like to link up with a companion or 2 that has some experience. Is that you?

Yea definitely. Problem is there aren't many places to go around the metro area. Beasley Knob and Durhamtown are each about 2 hours away. But I'm always looking for peeps to off-road with.

The "California cant do anything code"

Lol I dont know. All I know is my friend got pulled over and theres a law that states you need an "adequate windshield equipped" or something like that. I get it doesnt specify folded down or not. But if you het pulled over, youre not gonna win an argument.

i discussed this with 2 cop friends i had coffee with this morning; we couldn't find anything in the California code about windshields other than the fact than a vehicle has to be equipped with one, nothing that stipulates what position it has to be in.

i'll take my chances with any judge on this; not just because i usually win, but because no judge is going to be able to enforce anything that isn't specially prohibited by the Code.
for perspective, consider the laws on seat belts; there is code that says they are required, and there is code that says they must be used. difference here is that while there is code that says vehicles must be equpped with windshields, there is no code we've found that says they must be up and in use.

if anyone finds code that specifies otherwise, please share it!
