So I had a strange incident. I was in Helen GA and programmed a local repeater in my radio and I could not open the repeater. The strange thing was I had my FT-60 hand held in the camper and could open the repeater with that. How could I reach a repeater with 5 watts and not 50? I know the radio was programmed correctly. The radio in question is a yaesu 8800. I checked the swr today and it’s about 1.25 so I don’t think that’s it. I am running a diamond no ground plane antenna also. I know radios are strange in the jl because of the aluminum hood and all but this has me scratching my head.

My FTM-400 on the JL gets out very well, I would never expect an HT to outperform it. Are you sure you had your PL tone and offset programmed correctly? No loose connections? Output power on high?

Yes 1000 percent positive. The reason I know this is it was the exact same as on of my locals so it was already in both radios which I found convenient. When it would not open I entered in vfo mode and still the same.

What tone(s) is it using for Tx and Rx?

Very strange indeed… i suppose as long as you can still hit your local repeater with your mobile once you get home you can call it a strange anomaly. It seems far fetched, but if it functions normally otherwise I don’t know what else to say ?‍♂

Are both radios set to CTCSS or is one of them set to DCS? That might explain why you cant open the repeater as you already checked the PL tones and frequency offset.
