Brand new first time Jeep owner. Excited for all the customization options. First 24 hours had me add a gas cap cover, a spare tire cover, and running boards. I remember in the Army that antennas were always bent back (or forward, depending on the application) and hooked to the vehicle. I like the reception of the OEM antenna, but would like to bend it back and attach it to the upper A-Pillar with some sort of hook device. I have searched for hours on multiple Jeep and 4X4 sites, as well as the internet at large. I can't even find a reference describing doing anything of the sort. I find it really surprising that no one has thought of this and developed something. Has anyone here ever heard of such a device? If not, there may be some fabrication in my near future

So it doesn't whip around all over the place while driving, so I can drive though the car wash without worry, and so it doesn't smack the top of my garage door every time I come and go.

Not that I haven't thought of that - but I read a LOT of complaints about stubbies getting really bad reception. So, in answering the OP question, no one has ever seen this, it seems....

I haven't had my JL thru a car wash yet but my old TJ had 20+ years of car washes with zero damage to the radio antenna. And the antenna on my TJ or JL does not whip around at highway speeds. Keep in mind that if you bend the antenna you may affect reception on AM and/or FM.

Hadn't thought about the effect of an arc instead of a linear pole. Perhaps some middle ground could be with a 16 or 18 inch replacement. And since I can get one in black, I can rid myself of the only silver on the vehicle, which is Sarge Green with everything else 100% black.

The antenna on our Jeeps in the Army were for the comms and three times as long as the OEM antenna on the JL. They were mounted in the back, on a base with a spring and bent forward.
The only reason we tied them down was to keep them from getting torn up in the woods or snapping them off going under the bridges in Germany.

pic of my stuck Jeep on the East/Wes German border circa 1988 for amusement. You can see the antenna bent over the roof.

Nice pic! I am retired Army myself, and absolutely remember those. Seems we had some trucks (maybe the 5-ton, not sure) that had a front antenna pulled back near the cab. Either way - looks like my best bet is a replacement that is several inches shorter without going full-on stubby.

Is your garage door/entry that close that it will bend the antenna on your Jeep?

It doesn't bend it, but it just smacks the door frame. I'm not worried about damage, it's just annoying.

Good luck with whatever solution you come up with.

Why not just cut an inch off your original antenna and spray paint it flat black rubberized paint. I sprayed mine black two years ago and it's still holding up.
