That was it! The stubby had an adapter. Silly me. In case anyone is wondering why I'm going back to factory, reception has not been great with the short antenna. AND, see post below, "early warning device". A great idea!

How did you manage to get the adapter out? I ran into the exact same issue with mine when I replaced it with an aftermarket antenna, and when I went to remove it to swap the factory back in, the antenna body screwed out, but the adapter is still in there, real tight, no grip on the threads with pliers, any tips?

Mine came out with little effort. I suggest a good set of pliers or vice grips. Careful not to damage the fender mount. Try penetrating oil if it gives you problems.

@RichD Thanks so much for your help on this; it's been a pet peeve of mine for months! The stubby's reception is just not as good as the factory's. I had given up until I saw this thread. I will PlastiCoat it this weekend!
