Agreed about the black oxide. Without going too far down the rabbit hole.... The Mopar bolts have some form of "automotive" finish on them that protects from rusting. But they still rust. I think they are zinc coated with a black coating over it. The OEM bolts (I believe) have a black oxide coating on them but the coating particulars mean the coating is super thick. So it holds up better. Most of your aftermarket places like Fastenal or Grainger spec a much thinner coating because it is cheaper so it rusts much faster. I certainly haven't verified any of this. It's just my opinion on what's going on. Years ago I had a set of ARP bolts holding a set of wheels together and their black oxide finish has never rusted.I hear you, but I’m also pretty sure that the oem bolts from Mopar don’t need to be painted to stay rust free. Maybe I’m incorrect in thinking the oem XR wheels come with black bolts; is that correct? And are those like $2.50 a piece (so close to $300 for a set of them?).
Black oxide will rust overnight if not painted. I’m just wondering what the oem finish is that keeps them from rusting. I’m guessing they’re finished with an oem type paint, which makes sense buying wheels and bolts directly from Mopar.
Last question: are the oem bolts socket cap?
The cost is what gets me. When you install them with a torx bit the coating is going away. So they'll need to be chased with paint after install to stay away from rust. For $15 bucks in hardware per wheel and some paint time you can really cut your costs and have a better setup over time. I've chased all these stupid options with my Friction Double Beadlocks for years. Why I said earlier... it's a no win situation. ?
I feel like the easiest solution is to get whatever bolt you can the cheapest and paint them before install. Then you know what you start with.
So... I suck at bolt terminology I believe all 3 bolts here are socket cap screws. The left bolt is a cylindrical head socket cap. The middle bolt comes out of a 392 beadlock capable wheel and is a button head socket cap(m10). The right is my M8x1.25 button head socket cap screw.
