I use the driver-side A-pillar grab handle to get into my XR 4dr. almost every time. While initially stable, it is now bending toward the outside of the Jeep, and has play. This is causing a big gap in the trim piece up near the left side of the visor.

I have taken out the handle screws and examined the area behind the A-pillar trim. It seems the handle is bolted to a bracket that attaches to the roll bar, but the bracket is not "boxed" in, and is fatigued at the driver-side mount point. Anyone else with this problem? I'd think a part that was intended for repeated stresses would have been more securely mounted to the roll bar. Any ideas?

Thanks!

My idea is that it's being misused. It's not meant for you to pull your weight in and out of the Jeep; just stability. You still need to use your legs.

I'm inclined to agree with what the OP suggests: If the deformation is due to fatigue caused by nothing more than one's body weight, then the grab handles are under-engineered for purpose.

We shouldn't have to worry about implied disclaimers regarding the intended use case of such handles in a vehicle like the Wrangler, which has an unambiguous mission brief.

I wouldn't expect it to survive for extended periods if a "large" person was repeatedly putting a significant portion of their weight on it. You can design for some number of pounds, but there are limits.

Any such limits would be built-in, or self-inflicted, frailties. It's difficult to envision the vehicle engineers being unable to design a grab handle, of all things, that isn't as strong as the roll bar on which it's mounted.

Perhaps the practical capacity of the Jeep's grab handles are indeed limited, for reasons of cost or Lord knows what else. If so, that's unfortunate.

My days of being tall, svelte and nimble are long gone. Well I was never tall. Maybe time to look at some roll bar mounted grab handles that work with the 2024 and newer models and possibly some wider side steps or step sliders. We have a 2023 but have Bartact grab handles and Rock Slide Engineering step sliders. Expensive but looking at a broken A pillar grab handle every time I got in the Jeep would piss me off.

Yeah. I’m 180 lbs missing left arm and prosthetic left leg (from birth). Work in the woods as an environmental scientist. Kind of essential use for me. Didn’t see in the manual that the grab handle was for “light duty” or “stability” purposes only. ;) I did add a mopar roll bar grab handle, and it works, but not at optimal location for a one-hander.

i was able to restore the grab handle to the proper location, it’s just useless and moves if used. :(

imagine having someone have the grab handle tear out and the person falling and hitting the back of their head and dying.....I also have not seen it advertised for light use or having a weight limit disclaimer...I have bartact handles on my 2024 and shortened them so they fit pretty tight against the roll bar instead of hanging down...makes for a much better pull up...

It sounds like you have adapted well to your circumstances.

You need more buddy? I'm 210, I use both the factory grab handle and a roll bar grab handle.
Nah- I got ya by a few, but we’re nowhere near big guys. I use the grab handle with the little Mopar “step assist”. …..
