Honestly If I could stand an automatic I'd probably just get an old 4Runner. The whole reason I'm lurking here is I lost my beloved regular cab 4X4 Tacoma in an accident and the new ones have deviated too far from the recipe I prefer. What used to be a fun little utilitarian beast has morphed into a bloated form over function dad-wagon with bad ergonomics and an even worse powertrain.
LOL!!!!

(Not that I am disagreeing with you in any way!)

I like manual gearboxes, manual transfer cases and locking differentials, and couldn't care less about touch screens, luxury features or highway driving dynamics.
Preach it!

I never would have considered a Jeep until I spent a day in my brother's new used JKU. Compact dimensions, visibility, maneuverability, and just plain driving enjoyment are the closest I've experienced to my deceased truck. Not to mention in a Wrangler Unlimited as in my regular cab Tacoma, I can sleep comfortably in the back instead of fiddlef***ing around with rooftop or ground tents. I like manual gearboxes, manual transfer cases and locking differentials, and couldn't care less about touch screens, luxury features or highway driving dynamics.
Hmmmm.

If you really want a (2nd gen) single cab tacoma 4x4 with hand-crank windows, 5sp, 2.7, 33" tires, 4.88 gears and ARB lockers, armor, bumpers, etc... DM me. We might be able to work something out, as long as you're not in a big hurry.

Ha! My regular cab was a 5 speed 2.7L with 4:88s, 33's and front and rear Harrop E-lockers. 1st gen, though.

Your truck is awesome. Totally my style. But I think I'm near-decided on a 6 speed JLUR.

My 2019 Sport was struggling on even slight hills and rarely saw 6th gear with the 3.45 stock gears. I recently re-geared to 4.88 and went up to 35s and now shift to 6th at 55/60 mph. Even on hills I'm able to keep it in 6th when I used to have to shift down to 4th or 3rd.

Since I ended up with the JLUR myself, I get you. It's nice rolling down the highway and not hearing that 2TR-FE buzzing at 3000 rpm. And my old bod just can't abide those super-cheapo Tacoma bench seats anymore. I haven't done a lot of off-roading yet, but the bit I have; well, the SFA flex and articulation is just really nice.

With its IFS and non-disconnectable swaybar, the Tacoma can flex all the way from A to B. It's nearly helpless without locking diffs.

6th gear... that mysterious place my JL may visit once or twice a year, in and out quick, and always disappointing.

Unless your driving like a dick you'll generally be in 6th outside of climbing or passing.
Downshifting during those situations really isn't that complicated and if it is then you should have gotten the auto or the self driving Jeep or had your wife drive or granny.
But when you are climbing or passing skip 5th and go straight for 4th cuz if you're gonna do a thing... do a thing ! ?

It's a double Overdrive, 6th isn't for cruising in hilly country or pushing a brick into a headwind. It's there for optimal low load conditions like flat with a tail wind, downhill, etc. Between the manual guys wanting to set it in a gear and leave it and the auto guys bitching that their Jeep won't stay in 8th gear up hill or into a headwind, it's like nobody understands the purpose of the extra tall 2nd Overdrive. You're supposed to shift when the load increases just like the auto is functioning correctly when it does so.

My JLUR 6-speed has evolved form a stock 33inch 4.10 to small 35's (KO2's 315/70/17's) on 4.10's to finally the small 35's with 4.88 gears. Stock clutch but currently at OK4WD for the install of the CFII clutch kit with the heavier flywheel.

33's on 4.10's with stock bumpers etc was fine. Did not really use 6-speed until i was at 60mph or above on the flats. hills would drop down to 5th to maintain speed. 35's on 4.10's with bumpers (did a complete AEV conversion) essentially made the Jeep a 5-speed with 6th used on flats when i was above 70mph. 35's on 4.88's is transformative. I can drop into 6th at 50mph and pull away. Easily holds 6th gear at highway speeds on inclines loaded down with family and cargo.

These engines clearly need to be spinning at 2k and up to move the Jeep along. If you look at the torque curves of the 3.6 in this forum, you can see they make very little torque below 1,700rpm.

Interesting, SadRobot.

Can you tell us how the regearing affected your fuel economy, if you've driven enough since then to have determined the difference?

As much as I loved my Tacoma, it did not have the all day comfort in the dirt that I experienced in my brother's Jeep. Loved how smooth it rode over miles of rough dirt roads and baby head boulders. Quiet engine, comfy seats, plenty of shoulder and head room for 2 bigger dudes. This was in a lowly 7 or 8 year old JKU Sport with 70,000 miles or so on the clock and off-brand 33's. And the JLU's are even better.
