5 tire rotation question?

This is my first Jeep and it’s time for the tires to be rotated. I bought it used, so I don’t know what was done in the past. I know that all 5 were rotated, since the spare shows wear. I’ve seen posts about specific patterns to use. Since I don’t know how they were rotated in the past should I base my rotation off of tread depth, or just pick a pattern and go from there?

Measure the depth of all five and go from there. Place the most worn as your spare. Put your second most worn as next to rotate out. Pick your pattern.

I measure all the depths. I put the shallowest on the spare. 2 least worn tire go to the front and rest in the back.

Looks like there is a Discount Tire store location reasonably close to you. You can drop in any time and they will inspect, and rotate your tires at no charge. (No purchase necessary). Store personnel will be happy to answer any questions you may have about rotation patterns.

Thank you for the reply. I have used Discount Tire in the past. I had thoughts of doing the rotation myself, but may take it there and let the pros handle it.

It’s extremely easy to do yourself. All you need is a floor jack. Because you’re doing 5 tires you only need to lift one at a time.

Edit: also need a torque wrench if you’re anal like I am

Thanks for all of the replies. I may try it myself. I don’t have a floor jack, but my neighbor does.

One final question about tread depth. One of the replies said to put the highest tread on the front. What if when I measured my tires the drivers front has the highest tread (of the 4 currently on the axles), should I just move it to the passenger front and put the spare on the driver front? Or should I put the highest tread on the rear. I saw an article that said to put the highest on the rear for a rear wheel drive vehicle.

Rule of thumb is the best tread should go on the rear regardless of fwd, awd, rwd. This is because loosing traction in the rear is the hardest to overcome and often results in a spin. A counterargument is, if one of your rear tires is significantly different in tread than the other rear, it can cause drivetrain issues in the long term. Ideally, assuming you don't a have a brand new set, you'd have the two closest to each other, best tread tires on the rear.

My take is, unless you're talking about a significant difference in tread, more than 4 or 5/32 IMO, you're worrying a bunch over nothing.

When I went to my local Discount Tire they wouldn't do a 5 tire rotation and said a 4 tire rotation was standard...
