Three passengers? No. JLs (2 door) have 2 seats/seatbelts. JLUs (4 door) have 3.
Why? I do not know.

Fwiw, lots of other threes can fit. Three dogs, three buckets of baseballs, three ducks, three backpacks...

Depends how big the 3 are, but only 2 will have belts.

I wonder if anyone has ever attempted to swap/mod the 3 seater from a JLU into a 2 door? May be a dumb question and not at all possible, but both vehicles are same overall width I believe.

I don't think it's possible. On a 2 door, the rear seat sits between the wheel wells in the rear tub. On a 4 door, the rear seat is in front of the wheel wells.

There's probably a means to do it, but it'd involve a lot of kludging and fabbing.

That said, I've sat three in the back when my sister was in town with her boyfriend and wanted to get dinner with our mom, my wife and I. BF is Spanish and had never ridden in a Jeep, so had to give them all the top down open air experience. I wouldn't recommend it for a road trip, but a quick jog across town worked fine.
