As I understand it, the JL has lug nuts that are 22mm. I have a 7/8 socket that fits okay but is technically .23mm bigger than a 22mm. Should I get a dedicated 22mm socket to add to the tool bag? I'm wondering if the extra .23mm might make the wrench want to strip if/when I tighten a nut down to 130 foot-pounds? What say you?

The two are pretty much interchangeable imo. I am a little ocd though so I would use a 22mm since that is the “official” size or the nuts.

Get a 22mm 6 point socket. The lug nuts have a stainless steel skin/cover permanently attached to them. If you use a slightly large, or a 12 point socket, you will deform the outer cover each time, eventually making them impossible to remove without a special socket.

You’re better off removing them once, and replacing with a good quality spline nut. The 2 piece design of these nuts are just terrible.

Agreed on replacing! But get a good quality replacement that fits the OEM wrench just in case.

If this were some obscure bolt you are only touching once, then you could probably get by with the 7/8”. Since this is a lug nut, and you have a lot of these, get the 22mm!

Especially if you’re in an area prone to rust, the inner nut rusts which eventually swells the chrome cap making it almost impossible to get a socket to fit correctly.
I just replaced mine with one piece chrome lugnuts from Mcgard.

0.23 mm size difference is ok, but if it’s 0.24 mm then that is too much difference ?

Definitely get the 22mm 6 point deep socket. You may also need socket extension which I did in my case to get more room for the torque wrench. Otherwise the torque wrench touches the tire. A 25" breaker bar will also be very helpful to unscrew.

I always leave the breaker bar in my rig along with the 22mm socket for any emergency.
The spec says 130 ft-lb, I went with the cheap Harbor Freight torque wrench, so I did 125 ft-lb just in case the calibration is not accurate. I double checked the torque for couple times after driving a while. It's been over 3 months since my rotation and no issues.
