22k miles. Wife went to start it last week (5/16) and nothing, classic dead battery symptoms. I tried a jump pack and jumper cables with no luck so it was towed to the dealer. Next day (5/17) they called to tell me the batteries were fine but the alternator is dead, it’ll be 6-8 days for the part.

Today they call to let me know the tech is installing the alternator and it’ll be finished by end of day. An hour later they tell me the belt tensioner is faulty and it’ll need a new part and a new belt, 4-5 days for parts.

Stuff happens and we have other vehicles but man Jeep’s quality sure ain’t impressive. Wife is not happy that it’ll be over 2 weeks without her baby.

I’d be more interested in regards to the alleged “belt tensioner failure”.

It makes me wonder if the entire deal is a total misdiagnosis...and the belt tensioner was the issue the entire time.

Anything is possible....but it’s a rarity to have an alternator take a schittttttttt at 22k miles.....as well as a belt tensioner, unless some goon broke or damaged the belt tensioner whilst doing the alternator replacement.

My alternator decoupler pulley leaked out all the grease/oil at 37000 miles right after the warranty ended. It still worked but I read of you keep using it like that you'll have total alternator failure along with other problems. These newer jeep alternators added a decoupler sometime in the past few years. When it leaks you'll find a line of oil around the engine bay. There's a few posts on it and it seems to be a common thing.

Not sure that's what happened here, but it is stupid that my 03 tj still has the original alternator and my jl needed a new one after 3 years. And they say the decoupler pulleys make the alternator last longer. Now they sell just the new decoupler which is under 100 bucks, but when mine went they didn't.

Anyway, not pleased with these modern day disposable parts.

Hope you got that fixed under warranty. We have a 5yr/60k miles warranty on powertrain. Alternator is DEFINITELY part of the powertrain.

How do I know? I just called Jeep because my voltage regulator (part of the alternator these days) died. I need a new alternator. Was gonna just get one myself and do it. Napa, O'Reilly, Autozone - none of them could even find a part number.

Called Jeep dealership - they could get one in 5 days . . . for $650. Asked about warranty and they confirmed it was covered.

Now have an appt for 14 days from now. Just putting it on a battery charger every now and then. And carrying a spare battery in the back for jumpstarts.

Huh, I was told it's part of the electrical system. I guess I didn't look into it enough. Well anyway, I upgraded to the 240 amp. Paid around 300 on rock auto.

When it comes to a powertrain warranty it only covers parts inside the engine and transmission. I was denied warranty coverage on my last jeep when the transmission wiring harness went bad. They don't consider things like alternator or wiring harness to be part of the powertrain.

Just got it back yesterday actually, took nearly 3 weeks. Yes it was covered under warranty. When they went to remove the belt the tensioner broke so that was another week long wait for the part to come in. I'm going to delete the aux battery and replace the main battery with a DieHard today just for good measure.

When my water pump developed a leak at 36100 miles...it was NOT covered. Warranty are bullshit insurance with so many loopholes ya need to be a lawyer for the Salamanca's (Better call Saul...lol) to figure it out.

I replaced the water pump myself...

Curious, did you have the standard 36k mile warranty or was it denied for an extended warranty?

Just the basic 3/36000. But some engine components are 100k...not water pumps.

Really curious to why they denied it. Guess I really need to read ALL the fine print in the warranty. ??‍♂

My first car was a '99 Hyundai Accent. Thought I was hot shit cause I bought it brand new - $10,800.

The alternator went out on me in the first ~5K miles. Warranty replacement, don't remember how long it took them.

Drove that car for nearly 9 years, no other mechanical issues whatsoever.

Stuff happens, parts break. Doesn't necessarily serve as an indicator of overall quality.

Well, this is the chain of events...
The water pump developed a leak just over the 3/36k and I went to the local dealer and they said it was doubtful but could look at it in about a week to determine coverage.
They then said it would be 3 to 4 weeks before they could get it in regardless if it was covered or not...AND the cost was ridiculous...like $600 for the pump and I forget the shop hours....

Unfortunately my next nearest dealer is 75 miles away. That's how I became a water pump tech on a 3.0 diesel Jeep.

Honestly, I REALLY don't want those yahoo's wrenching on the jeep anyway especially when I have the means to do it in my shop.
