Of course they’re different. Are they owned by or have any partnership with the manufacturer? No. You just don’t like that the business succeeded well enough to have multiple locations. You’re not looking for solutions.
By your definition, a dealer is a "successful independent".

One of my local GM dealers started out as a gas station/garage...it still was when I was a kid, but it had a small used car lot attached by then. These days it's a franchised GM dealer with a huge lot, pretty showroom, and 8-bay service dept. So by your definition, that's an independent mechanic.

The point here is not where the service establishment came from...it's origins are not wrenching on your JL. One of its current employees is...and a chain place like Lee Myles has the EXACT SAME GUYS that dealers hire...there's one or two experienced techs that have been there awhile and a whole bunch of newbies that turnaround every few months. They follow the exact same scripts and processes that the dealer service departments follow. All the same problems exist there as at the dealer.

✋ I'm interested. :)
OK i'll edit my statement - ONE GUY here is interested.

That said, you don't have to worry about missing out - Tred has a new thread full of his randomness at least once a week. So don't fret, you'll have plenty of content to enjoy....that is until he eventually gets himself banned.

They are by definition not independent. This is going nowhere.

Just because I'm curious but how do you actually know this? I mean do you go down there and check on who they hire or something? Keep running tabs on who goes where and when?

We should have a poll..... I'm interested as well. Tred has a fan club of his nonsense and its pretty damned funny most of the time.

I don't think Forums are a suit and tie happening. we come here for information, entertainment and the occasional thread hijack, sprinkled self with embarrassment. .....Sprinkles are for winners, after all.

I’m thankful for this thread, reminded me that it’s probably a good time to go clean the contacts on my 2022 high tides cap and rotor so I ensure that I get a good firing order.

once of prevention equals a pound of cure, you gotta maintain these suckers…

You make it seem like I would have to be an insider to know this. But this is not like special insider knowledge. I'm actually more surprised that you DON'T know this. I tend to assume that everyone who, like me, wastes any amount of their time actively posting on a vehicle forum meets the minimum bar of car interest necessary to know the basics about how the car repair world works in the modern day.

As for me specifically - I have quite a few friends who are expert level techs in various specialties and they've been through most of the area's bigger establishments. We have some great independent shops, but places like NTB, Lee Myles, Pep Boys...etc...are not that, and really no different than dealers in the context in which we are speaking.

We should have a poll..... I'm interested as well. Tred has a fan club of his nonsense and its pretty damned funny most of the time.

Oh I agree - as I explained to Tred himself in one of his randomness threads - being the forum comedian isn't a problem. The problem is when he wants to then turn around and be respected as an expert source of information. That doesn't work for him, he's not cut out for it...it's only going to result in eventual banning. So I encouraged him to stick with the fun side of forum life.

Bought a Jeep Wrangler unlimited new in 2019. Our 4th. I have zero knowledge of cars. I always thought it just sounded more powerful than our last ones, what do I know. Turns out it was the distributor. We have our own mechanic but of course this can only be fixed by dealer. The dealer in town took a $4k cad deposit. Parts took 2.5 months to come in. When hubby called and said can you look around to get parts sooner, they looked on computer while still on phone with hubby and said oh here’s one ?. Final price $4700. After getter by it back the remote start stopped working. Brought back to dealer, they need to replace a camshaft. Quote: $7000. Not to mention, in early 2023 we noticed the paint starting to bubble. It’s past the warranty. Wtf?? I bought my first 4 dr in 2008 and it was around $40k now they are $65k plus yet the quality is crap? I always thought we’d be Jeep people forever. Now I’m can’t afford to. Anyone else experience any of these issues? Hubby’s 2019 2 door just had something done for $3k and his also has the death wobble on the highway.
we are jeep people too and my current jeep is proving to drain my bank account and patience. I am starting to look at broncos as an alternative

All I am getting from this thread is the OP needs a life coach and that TheRaven is insane.

Is that about it?
