So I’ve been looking into head unit replacements for my 2018 wrangler unlimited sport JL (have the most basic trim: manual doors/windows/ 5inch stock head unit) and wondering what would be the best option.

I’ve looked into several plug and play options: insane audio, heigh10, and the factory OEM upgrades. The less splicing/wire work I’d have to do the better, but I’m not unfamiliar with it if needed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I believe a 7” OEM would be easiest. I looked into one a couple years ago and it didn’t look too bad. Never got around to it and now I’m used to the 5”😏

The least expensive way to go aftermarket is one of these:

https://axxessinterfaces.com/product/AXPIO-JL1

which lets you install one of these:

https://www.crutchfield.com/S-pMDVm...K1KiUQO7mQDgB0qQjzA2mwoGeK8eOSPxoCEicQAvD_BwE

The adapter kit comes with a camera because the factory camera is digital and the aftermarket HU's take an analog video signal. It's all plug and play and comes with it's own can-bus adapter.

Next level in price is this:

https://www.crutchfield.com/S-qSGIM...jdJHUMIO_GAikISA_Gk2uXMIKU2_sRKhoCcVgQAvD_BwE

then you are into the Stinger and Heigh10.

I'd be curious to know what your plans are after. Adding amps, speakers, subs?

Well, now you've scratched an itch.
We have a '21 willys sport unlimited(no power locks/windows) with a 5" screen as well. If we were to replace with one of the aforementioned head units or another, what effect would that have on the auxiliary switches(tow package) and their selectable settings? Would the switches default to either momentary or latching?

Appreciate the insight! Definitely leaning towards a bigger sized screen so I'll probably end up going the stinger/heigh10 route. Though I did notice today that insane audio is come out with their new JL4001 head unit... May be looking into that one as well.

Not entirely sure yet, but most likely won't add an amp or sub. Already replaced my tweeters and roll-bar speakers and surprisingly have great sound just from swapping those out. I have looked into the sub enclosure that goes into the trunk a couple times but not sure I want to do that. Maybe someday haha

I have the same Factory set up and installed the Stinger Heigh 10 a few weeks ago. It is a simple process, very straightforward and no splicing,Only crimping.

I've never installed a head unit before and I was able to get this done with ease.

Be forewarned, the hardest part is getting all those harness tucked in. It's the last step and definitely a pain.

The look is amazing and looks factory. The Jeep specific features make the Heigh 10 the clear option for those willing to spend. The 15 band EQ will allow you to really get the most out of your audio.

You have aftermarket speakers and I know the Heigh 10 will improve the sound even more. I have stock speakers and it still made a huge difference.

The only other unit I was looking at was the Alpine Restyle. I went to the Stinger because of the 15 band EQ, the Jeep specific features, and of course the price. The customization capabilities are amazing and I am glad I went this direction.

In the end it's your choice. Keep doing your research and enjoy the process.

I remember saying the same thing. I'm now amplified to all speakers that have been swapped for JL's including adding the JL sub. The difference from the original 5" was like going from a CJ5 to a 392. It screams even with the top and doors off while going 80 on the highway.

Depending on the options you have, and what you want, I'll give you some of my opinions:

If you're a stereo guy: Either the Alpine 409 or 509, or the Heigh10. Good sound with plenty of options for extras.

If you want better OEM integration: either the OEM 7" or the 8.4" with some extra parts to make it work.

Since you're starting with the base radio, I would guess the 7" would be the easiest to install.
