My vehicle 2.0t unlimited 61000 miles has a cold rattle start. Dealership says normal. So does the car come off the assembly line with this rattle? Is there a fix?

Mine does the same. If you search the forums here it will be a common thing. Someone here referred to it as it sounded like a Farm Tractor when started cold but would go away once warm. I would aggre. Once its warm it smoothes out.

+1 to the preceding post.

From new, the 2.0T in my JLU has sounded mechanically busy, so to speak, after a cold start. Once fully warmed and idling, it transforms into one of the quietest engines that I've owned.

51k on mine and it’s a little diesel engine in the mornings. By the time it warms up it’s a smooth 4cyl. Always wondered if it’s a chain guide not getting oil pressure until warmed up. But i figured if it was an issues we’d all be replacing chains and guides by 60k miles.

53k miles on mine, bought it with 27k but same experience with cold starts, once it's warmed up it's smooth and quiet.

Changing my oil every 5-6k miles seemed to have quieted my cold starts compared to when I first got it and then did my first one after 8k.

How often are you changing your oil and filter and which ones are you using @Jgreer0109 ?

I purchased it used and did not hear the sound until a few days later. Working from home. Do not drive that much. I'm taking it in this week for a tune up or 60,000 maintenance.

60K is the point at which ZF recommends a transmission fluid and filter change. This is at odds with the "lifetime fluid" nonsense printed in the Owner's Manual. My selling dealer refused to perform the service, leaning heavily on said language. I then purchased the necessary supplies and did the job myself, twice, in order to maximize the replacement of the old fluid (the system capacity is 9.5 quarts, but only 5.5 quarts will drain out when the pan is removed.)

You might consider asking your dealer what they'd charge for that particular service, just to see how they respond.

P.S. -- At 60K, the vehicle will be due for its second air filter replacement.

I didn’t really notice my JL’s rattle until around 6,000 miles. It could have been there since day one but just got loud enough to catch my ear. While it doesn’t sound like a drier full of marbles, it kind of sounds like the Hemi “tick” that my Hellcat had. I wouldn’t sweat it, the electrical system will strand you way before the engine will……

I don't drive much per year,, say 3 -5k miles.. I change oil and air filters in december of every year on all my cars regardless. its a moment away, a few beers and simple. Thinking of using Royal purple to see how it goes.

Your mistaken, these transmissions are stout they’ll survive between oil changes for longer intervals waiting til 120k is fine for most cases. This video shows Brad getting his done by a friend mechanic. His friend in this video is a certified Jeep mechanic.

Your argument isn't with me, mate. It's with ZF Friedrichshafen AG themselves. Here's a company document that makes explicit mention of a 93K mile (converted) fluid replacement interval. As noted in the last paragraph on p. 1, that interval should be lower depending on operating conditions.

A fluid replacement interval of 50K miles is mentioned here. The popularity of this thread isn't accidental. Credible sources, all. A clickbaity YouTube video? Not so much.

Should the repair bills be sent your way, if or when an owner who follows your advice experiences a transmission failure as he tries for 120K? Let us know. ;)

I respectfully disagree with you and your findings. In my youth and now I'm 56, I worked for a custom machine auto shop from 19-23 age. I now work as a aircraft mechanic. I learned many things from dismantling engines and transmissions in that time. I posted this video not ruin anyone's rides and cost people expensive repair bills but its because i know what will work. Enjoy your lunch
