Most definitely the 17x8.5 with zero offset. These will have the tires just passed the fenders. The 17x9 with that offset will make your Jeep look stupid as heck with tires way out of the fenders like old shool rollerskates.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, still learning all this stuff

Should I do a 17x9 wheel or 17x8.5 wheel if I want to upgrade to 285/70/17 tires?
I saw that 17x9 is the most popular size but then read some stuff that 17x8.5 is more rounded and better protection...

It shows that both sizes fit my JL so I guess the only difference will be how much poke there is?

For a 2021 2 door sport with stock suspension, will eventually get rubi springs

Mostly daily driving use and light trails

Keep in mind that Jeep only uses a 7.5 inch rim on Rubicon trim with the stock tire size that you are talking about using. On the XR package with the 305 tires the rim is only 8 inches wide so, at max I would go with the 8.5 inch rims you show.

If you ever plan on adding a lift. I would go to the lift website and look at the recommended back spacing of the recommended wheels.

To throw another wrench in your plans, here’s what a 17x9 with 0 offset looks like on a Rubicon.

It’s for a sport so the axles are narrower.

I’d say minimum 8.5s so he can get bigger tires later if he decides to.

Looks great! Yeah sport has narrower axles so wouldn't poke as much?

Thank you I understand the offset/poke better now! I'm going with 17x8.5 0 offset

Correct. It wouldn’t poke as much. I figured if you saw what the 0 offset looks like with the wider axles it might take some concern away for anyone else considering these with the narrow axles.

Nice yeah I wanted a slightly poked out past fender look so that might be perfect

Just installed 285/75R18 tires (34,8 in) on stock 7,5 in wheels. Tire width is 11,5 in vs 10,5 on the stock ones. Will put them on the Jeep and let tou if they rub anywhere without spacers. I’ll post pictures. Bought yoko geolandar at xd all weather. They will be tested next week-end on the trail.
