Recirculated air button or is my Jeep just humoring me?

This may be a strange question - hopefully my wording makes sense...Can you switch to recirculate without running the A/C? I've been running the heat and pushing the recirculate button. The A/C compressor comes on every time. It seems like I either have to run the A/C with the heat, shiver with the heat off, or smell the oil-burning garbage truck in front of me. Suggestions?

Yeah A/C turns on when I turn recirculate too but you can turn A/C off and recirculate will stay on.

I've been turning off the A/C but still smelling the vehicles in front of me. And after a few minutes, the recirculate button turns itself off.

hmmm that's strange...but I believe it is normal tho for the recirculate to turns itself off automatically for oxygen

I don't particularly like to run the heat without the AC on it gets a bit humid.

Yes, the recirculate button automatically turns on the AC to condensate the added humidity natural to our breathing.

The air inside the Jeep would get stale pretty quickly otherwise.

AC does not necessarily mean "cold".

It means the air is being conditioning via some form of interference with the vehicle's HVAC system.

You can have AC on, with the temperature set to hot, and you will get hot air.

When you engage re-circ mode, the HVAC unit is required to pull the air in from the floor/defrost, pump it through the cabin filter, then out.

Thanks for the responses. I've had close to 20 vehicles since high school. This is the only one that doesn't allow recirculation without interference. Not just weird - annoying. It's like big brother is in the Jeep with me. :-(

I've owned only three vehicles and all three do this. It's a safety feature. The cabin will quickly become humid when on recirculate and condensation may fog the windows. If you aren't in a cool climate this may not be an issue, but in winter it's most definitely a safety concern. It's made worse in a jeep since your face and breath are practically smushed against the windshield. And the defrost has lackluster coverage to boot.

Never knew I could still use the heater with A/C on. I’ve been turning the A/C button off when using the recirculate feature. Thx!

Mine does the same. And only turns off on its own if the defroster setting is on. I can turn the ac off and recirc will stay on in any other mode.
My Jeep turns off the recirculate button regardless of what vent I have set and not just defrost. It’s so frustrating. Driving in horrible DC traffic with stinky vehicles in front of you there’s no way to block the pollution from coming into the Jeep except to turn the vent completely off and shiver

From the Wrangler 2020 digital manual, p49 "Recirculation may be unavailable if conditions exist that could create fogging on the inside of the windshield."

Leave the air conditioner on to dehumidify the cabin air.
