I went through this a couple months ago when I put a 285/70-17 spare on. Not only are the carriers different the chmsl mount is also different.

Sport on the left Rubicon on the right, the loop the brake light on the Rubicon mounts too is also bigger to position the light higher.

Which was the correct one to get? How'd it work out?

I got one from a member here on the forum from a Rubicon. The one on the right in the picture is about an inch taller, the 285 tire would fit on the stock Sport carrier but the bump stops were very compressed. if you order one I believe this will be the right one for 285/70-17 tires, 68297540AH.

it looks like 68297540AH was superseded by 68442146AA.

Thanks for the info Gregj. I think I've located a take off Rubi carrier to use and make life easier when adding Rubi tires on the Sport.

When I put 285 tires on my sport the tire doesn't even touch the bump stops. I guess its the backspacing of my new wheel.

Where does the Sahara fit in this, does it get the one on the sport or the one on the Rubicon or a different one altogether?

Ok, so I received two different PM’s today with questions about this so to save typing what I know about this again here is a couple cut and paste from those conversations.
I don't know for sure. There were three different carriers at one time, one for Sport, one for Sahara and one for Rubicon. Now it appears there are only two, I am not at home now but will take a measurement of both carriers when I get home to post. Sorry I don't have all the info.

I think that is the Sahara version that was discontinued and superseded.

I don't know if that one will help as I don't have a Sahara to compare.

So, the height difference between them is not as much as I thought. Sport is 7 7/8 and Rubicon is 8 1/4.

Thanks Gregj. Is the difference in height only in how far they stick out from the tailgate (horizontal distance) or the distance to the bumper (vertical distance)?

Vertical distance from the bumper appears to be the same, difference is distance from the tailgate to wheel mounting surface.
