Replacing filter and make sure oil level is adequate. You might need a little more oil because of the amount that stays in the filter. Maybe 10-15% of a quart. Like you said, insurance...

We're taking ours in to get the ESS "fixed" It never worked since we bought it, so figuring either a bad door sensor or the aux battery is bad. regardless, we'll have 'em fix it. Plus, I'm going to burn one of the Jeep Wave free oil changes. We're at 1,350 miles at this point. After that first oil change, I plan to go every 5,000 from that point forward (with full/real synthetic) oil.

OK. I just found Mobil 1 M1C-456A oil filters on clearance at 3 local Walmart’s for $3.99 each!!!!! Get em while they are hot. I bought 22 of them. No more around Sachse Tx.

Ah ha, an oil filter hoarder. ;):)

When the apocalypse comes you'll be a very popular man in the Jeep community.

There is a pressure switch under the hood towards the left side. There are two of them. One is for ESS. If you remove it, it disables it. The only issue is , you will have the ESS icon on all the time. I personally don’t like this feature, so I disable ig manually every time I drive the Jeep. But take it to the dealer and it should be a software issue at most.

Its like a stem switch that when you open the hood, pops out. Around the front towards the driver side. One of them is for the ESS. I was talking about javalina’s issues with their ESS. I suggested unplugging the switch . It is factory installed and if you unplug it, the ESS becomes disabled. The only thing is, the ESS icon is going to appear when you start the Jeep.

But make sure you plug it back in when you go for service at the dealer.

Got it.
So is that all you need to do to "disable" the ESS System ? Simply unplugging that switch, prevents the ESS system from engaging; however, the light stays on ?

Is that having any impact on these battery issues I am reading about ?

I guess one of my bigger concerns is this whole jump starting issue....Seems like a simple lithium Jump Pack doesn't work without a hack that a very smart Jeeper came up with or go with the Genesis system....

Ideally, I'd prefer the old system......However, If all I need to do is press a second button when starting, no big deal, If the new system is draining batteries and a PITA to ever jump start it without a second vehicle to assist, then that causes a safety concern.
I can't imagine that some ProCal/Flash Pak out there can't disable the system and make things simpler again......

Oil Change???
1,400 miles for our first one. YMMV. Afterwards, I'm planning a 5K change cycle, providing it's "full, true synthetic". Gotta watch the US oils. Only because the US can be loosey-goosey, with the synthetic definition. The German oil on the other hand is very tight on the legal definition. :)

For my Rubicon, I only use Pennzoil 0-w20 full synthetic, Mopar filter and it runs really good. I know some of us work and its a hassle to change oil and such. But I am retired and I enjoy doing the oil change myself. It is a "bonding" experience. And gives me something to do. Knowing it's done properly without cutting corners gives me peace of mind. I even have a separate tool bag with the oil changing wrenches and sockets.

I just did my first oil change yesterday, 6/15. Brought her home on 3/18, and was at nearly 2600 miles. I did full synthetic which I did not run on my JKU I had for 5 years. Just starting up already feels better and smoother to me.

I've never felt much difference in engine noise and smoothness after oil changes, even when switching brands and weights, but today I changed the oil in my JK 3.8 and am pretty certain I feel and hear a difference (for the better.) I went from Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage 5w30 (6k miles) to Valvoline Modern Engine 5w20. I picked up that Valvoline on clearance at Wal Mart a couple months ago. The 3.8 seems to like it, so we'll see how it goes as the miles rack up on it. If I continue to feel it runs smoother, I may try a run of their 0w20 in the JL.
