Driving around reno/tahoe I noticed many lifted 4x high fiving me. I made a observation that lifted or mod jeeps especially so. I also noticed that most stock 4x/jeeps do not exhibit this behavior.

Did I just join a cult?

In short, yes you did join a cult. Be sure to wave at fellow cultists. Priority is any Jeep older than yours, specifically CJs, YJs, TJs and even JKs. Other than those models you only need to wave back at lifted 4x4s or anyone else who waves first.

I have had my JL since late late Thursday and have had a horrible return on acknowledgements. The first couple days I made a joke of it with my wife of how many i had wave vs how many I saw: "Well I am 4 for 9 today so far" "End of the day and I am 7 for 22"

I have mostly noticed that females do not wave. At all. My wife said she discussed it with a coworker that had a Jeep and that they are aware of it, but they actively ignore it.

I've noticed that the return-wave percentage goes way up as the weather warms. Perhaps this is because so many of us have tops off and can easily see the other Jeeper wave. Or perhaps it's just because we are all in a better mood when it's nice out.

I have observed incredibly poor return rates (from both lifted and stock) to the point now I don't even look at oncoming Jeeps so I don't feel obligated to wave and inevitably get rejected/ignored.

I live in Houston and my girlfriend claims people don't wave back often "in the city". She also has a Jeep but originally from the country and claims everyone waves out there.

I think everyone tries to make connections who waves back and who doesn't, but ultimately it's probably just who actually sees it in time, is aware the wave is a thing, and is friendly enough to wave back.
