Regarding insurance, a friend of mine rolled her Grand Cherokee on the Moab Rim trail and the insurance company paid to have it fixed (though it was never really right afterward). I suspect American Jeeper is covered.

This sucks, can someone from the insurance industry let me know if this is going to be covered or not? The Jeep is probably totaled, and gone of any interior mod upgrade (the exterior one probably can be reused), also the medical bill and civil case...

Does the event itself carry any insurance? I'd be surprised if it didn't.

This is an example of the importance of carrying and knowing how to use a Tourniquet, anyone and I mean anyone in 10 minutes can be taught to apply a tourniquet effectively. My kids carry tourniquets in their backpacks and know how to use them. We have over a decade of experience with the GWOT and stopping the bleed saves lives.

The reporting is lousy, an amputation is a medical procedure. What they are most likely refering to is a compound fracture. Bone broken, exposed wound.

A traumatic amputation or "traumatic partial amputation" of a limb is a medical term.

Well that’s ****ing brutal. The dude probably had his shirt off in the one picture because he was using it as a tourniquet (possibly, who knows). I have a friend who had to use his bootlaces as a tourniquet a few months ago... it happens.

Well, actually amputation means removal of a limb or digit. I would bet that most amputations occur as a result of trauma and not in the OR. PA in TennesseePA is for Physician Assistant. I am currently a Primary Care provider but I do have ED experience and trying to get back into EM.

Yup. When someone is missing a body part whether a hand, foot, leg, or finger in the field prior the arrival of emergency services it’s still considered an amputation. A surgical amputation could be a toe or foot for a diabetic for example and is performed by a trained professional typically in an or. A surgical amputation can be performed in the field however that’s less than ideal as you can imagine.

Ok, as far as terminology is concerned, you have a credible background. Me, I am just an old Boy Scout.

The purpose of my comment was to point out the general lack of information in the reporting. Sure, HIIPA limits what any medical professional can say, yet I wish the reporters would try to address basic questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how.

Hopefully the victim will be ok, and will make a full recovery, but right now we just do not have much beyond rumors to go on.

It’s HIPAA. Next time you go to the dr office check what they have around the office. More times than not it’s HIPPA which is incorrect. I’m sure the office people love me but having me sign a document that is supposedly a legal agreement and is written incorrectly bothers me.
