Best wishes to all in this sad turn of events. :(

IF you are out at these and on foot its important to remember alot of things can happen, accidents, equipment failures, unexpected ground events (breakways, slides, etc), recovery equipment breaking, anytime someone is on gassing it 45 degrees to either side could have potential events, view from further away. I used to see all kidns of stuff when I was young working with heavy equipment.

especially kids and such that may not react or be watching closely.

in any event sad to hear

This plus I want add as a driver you need communicate with spotters and spectators your planned lines and method of attack and make sure people are out of your way before you go and if you cannot see the top that a spotter makes sure it is clear.

I have done many hard hill climbs where the only way up is lots of skinny pedal and sending it. But I always make sure that people, pets, and other rigs are clear before driving and I have a nice landing strip.

Not trying to place blame here, just bringing up the point that safety is everybody's responsibility.

However, on a lighter brighter note, did you all notice his windshield did not crack? Or at least I didn't think I saw it cracked from the pictures I saw. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for everyone.
:CWL: The smallest tiniest ding can see these windshields with cracks a mile long; but a serious accident and it stays strong .... :movember:

Very glad it didn’t shatter as that would of been bad for AJ; but the irony.

Best wishes to everyone involved. :jk:

Like all others I wish speedy recoveries to the bystander, driver, and JL, in that order. And I only prioritize the bystander over the driver because I understand the bystander to be more severely injured.

Since I've never been to Moab, UT I have a question:

What might be concluded about the severity of the bystander's injuries given that she was air lifted out?

Here's my point. In my urban locale, if you're getting air lifted, you've got some really life threatening stuff going on that might require a level 3 trauma center (i.e. where they bring the "bad" stuff.)

But in Moab, given that it's more rural, might more than just life or death emergencies be transported by chopper given potential distances to hospitals equipped to handle "level 2" trauma?

Thanks.

Good question and I had considered the same thing in the hopes that maybe her injuries weren’t life threatening. When I hear air medevac I think urgent surgical care is needed.

In this case I would imagine there was at minimum fear of losing a limb.

Based on the post by @anotheraznguy the bystander has a partial leg amputation.

This sucks, can someone from the insurance industry let me know if this is going to be covered or not? The Jeep is probably totaled, and gone of any interior mod upgrade (the exterior one probably can be reused), also the medical bill and civil case...

Thanks for this 411, @TJ2018 as well.

Assuming field amputation, partial or not, trauma induced and/or on scene medical team necessitated, we're looking at tourniquets, blood loss, and the potential for more blood loss in transit, and time based tissue loss if "pipes" aren't sealed and tourniquets released....

...not to mention the need for a Vascular & Orthopedics team to repair vessels and possibly attempt the reattachment of stuff ASAP.

Definitely the stuff of heli-rescue to level 3 trauma center....

Prayers for both the bystander and driver to heal, physically and mentally.

As others have already said it was reported that she had severe damage to her leg. And there aren't any serious trauma care centers very close to Moab. IIRC Grand Junction might be the closest hospital that is relatively large.
