35s are on!

I was going to go with some Method 701s and these tires, but then I saw these wheels only weigh 21.6 lbs! Woah. I do like the "sunk" look a bit, tons of fender and mud flap coverage. Should be easier on the ball joints too.

I went with Falken Wildpeak AT4W 35x11.50R17 Load Range C. I have these same tires on my F-150 in 18" diameter and they have been excellent.

On the drive home from the tire shop I didn't notice any loss of power and they ride smoother than the smaller BFG KO2s thank to more side wall while still being Load Range C. They are 17.1 lbs a tire heavier. AT4Ws aren't light tires and these are the Load C ones, but all of that weight equals durability for these. They are only 6.1 lbs more than the 315 KO2s, while being .6" taller but .7" narrower. I believe my Rubicon wheels are probably 15 lbs lighter than the Xtreme Recon Wheels, so I'm still lighter than that setup. Good to go!

The best part about these tires is the fact that they still have the 3 Ply Duraspec Sidewall. They are tough as nails in the rocks. I don't air down past 15 or 18 psi, so I'm not concerned about popping a bead.

Since these tires are 11.5" wide they are approved for 7.5" wheels.

I gained an inch and 1/8" clearance over the factory BFGs.

I like the stock wheels but whenI run the stock wheels I use 1" BORA spacers to push the tires out a bit....all personal preference..with 1" spacers you don't have to trim the studs.

Just ordered a set of 5x 255/85/17 MT BB AT to install on my 24 JLU manual trans.

Ebay has them on sale + another $75 off. Got all 5, shipped, for $1,635 😎

What psi does everyone run? Standard 36? I've seen folks mention 28-32 as well.

Thanks!

28-32 is good as is 30 :). I have about 20,000 miles on mine at 28-30psi. on stock wheels I run mine with 1" BORA adaptors https://www.motorsport-tech.com/bor...T70yGYHROep7x2CxYlofU54lD0oEv_4Rqm8HQvz4nFMQU 1" clears the stock studs and looks much better.

I’m looking to upgrade from my stock KO2’s to something a bit bigger. But I want to keep the tires inside the fender and keep the weight down. Plus it needs to do well in the snow. A skinnier tire than the standard 315/12.5 should fit the bill.

My top 2 contenders are the Toyo Open Country AT3 in 35x11.5 and the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT in 255/85/r17. Both are 3 peak rated, get good reviews, and weigh within a pound of each other.
The Toyo is a similar width as the stock tire, while the MT is a bit narrower.
Both cost about the same.
The MT seems to get slightly better reviews.
The MT is load range E compared to the load range C of the Toyo. That does worry me. I do not want a harsh, bumpy ride on the street, nor do I want to have to air down on short off-road trips.

What is your all preference? Is the narrow MT supple enough to not rattle over every pebble? How does it compare to the 285 KO2’s?

I haven’t seen it discussed here, but when I check some online tire pressure calculators it actually says the pressure should be slightly higher on the 255’s compared to the 285’s due to the decrease in width.
I don’t know if that represents the real world though.

I have actually run both of those tires...the 255/85-17 are taller than the at3's both good tires. I would get the Mickey thomsons again. I like them better than the at3's. they both do great in the snow. I would not let the E rating worry you. just run 28-30psi and they are smooth and quiet. the 255/85-17's do great on slick roads and in snow and have done great on slick rock. I have had both in moab.

Oh sweet. Are you running a lift on the JLUR with the MT BB AT?

Thanks!

yes AEV 2.5 but I also run a set of mickey thompsons in 37x12.5-17's so need a lift. I literally put the 255/85-17 on when my jeep had 240 miles and the lift the next day.

Nice. I have a 1.5" Teraflex Spacer lift and was curious on the look/if we had matching heights.

Guess I'll find out the look on friday, pics will be posted here.

Thanks!

Thought i would add mine. Been happy so far and they tuck perfectly. Toyo open country 38x11.5 r17 45 or 55k mile warranty.

This is where we were riding you could have 2 Jeeps pass each other with the newly widened trails.

There's also a brand new Toyo RT Trail in 35x10.5r17, C load, 56 pounds, that might interest you.

I’m curious what pressure you run if you air down for a rough trail on the MT’s?

I run my 255/85/17 MTATBBs daily at 29psi. Depending on the trail I’ve gone as low as 10psi on stock sport steel wheels with no issue. Most offroad trails I run 13psi.

12-14psi works for me.
