  1. Sleeping Pads

A memory foam mattress topper may work. But itā€™s going to take up the whole inside of your Jeep. I have seen anything inflatable in that size, at least not with an ok R-value.
  2. Lift vs larger tires for better offroad performance?

Itā€™s interesting that this thread appeared now. My plan was to add a 2-3 inch lift and 35ā€™s when my stock tires wore out. However, I donā€™t drive that much so it may be years until that happens. I find the approach and departure angles in the stock JLUR to be pretty good, but breakover is only...
  3. Guy Line Replacement

Take a look at uhmwpe cord. Itā€™s basically an unbranded Spectra or Dyneema cord. Amsteel is also a popular branded version of it. Itā€™s super strong, and it can be bought in thinner thicknesses, often for kite strings. The thicker cordage is used in rock climbing and boating. I use it for...
  4. Jeep Wrangler Q4 and Full-Year 2023 Sales Results

The other factor is how global these companies are and whatā€™s happening outside the US. It can cost billions of dollars to design and create a new model from scratch. This means you need to sell a lot of them to make it all back. One way to make this cheaper is to reuse parts across multiple...
  5. help a nooB offroad wannabe out 8; - recovery gear essentials

I go pretty lightweight, but I also usually travel with 1-2 other vehicles and try to avoid situations where Iā€™m likely to get stuck. 1 tree saver. 1 tow rope (I havenā€™t gotten around to getting a proper recovery rope) 1 soft shackle. 1 shovel. A winch would be nice if I was alone more often...
  6. Recommendations for Offroad

I think the already mentioned LP6 would do fine for your long and mid distance. I like the squadronā€˜s with the wide cornering lens for near field ditch lights. Angle them 45 degrees outwards for maximum coverage.
  7. Basic Lighting Questions - for those that have installed LED aux lights

The OEM aux wires in the engine bay and footwell are hot. Meaning they donā€™t just act as a relay, you can use them to power your lights. Just find anywhere else on the chassis for the ground. The best gauge wire depends on how much current your light pods require and how long the cable is. The...
  8. What did you do TO your Jeep JL today?

I got the 15w version, but ended up in the passenger footwell for a couple of reasons. My mic mount attaches to the left side of the passenger grab bar, and I was trying to avoid using an extender on the mic cable. So if the device was in the driver footwell, the cable would cut across the...
  9. What did you do TO your Jeep JL today?

I installed a midland GMRS radio yesterday. As someone who has very little experience with removing interior trim and wiring, what a pain! Getting the antenna mounted and the cable routed into the cabin was fairly easy. But wiring it, finding a place to mount it, and getting the cables out of...
  10. (Too) Bright Headlights

I aimed my down a bit. If you look closely you can tell whether your beams are aimed high enough to be in peopleā€™s mirrors or not. Iā€™ve never been flashed yet, but I donā€™t drive as many miles as many of you here do.
  11. Diode Dynamics ss3 max or pro? What lens type should I use?

Thats one of the reasons why I went with Baja Designs for my ditch lights. Their wide cornering lens is in between the Fog and Driving beams from DD in width.
  12. Diode Dynamics ss3 max or pro? What lens type should I use?

Ahh, in that case I love the driving pattern lens on my pair of SS5 pros. It throws a bit further to my high beams, but the beam is much wider, taller, and has more spill. My driving pros are over 9,000 lumens each, and 170,000 cd. Two driving lens pros, with the lights angled so that each edge...
  13. Diode Dynamics ss3 max or pro? What lens type should I use?

Anything other than the Fog lenses will create a ton of glare in snow. It would be like turning on your high beams, but even worse. And if the snow is bad enough that you truly need amber fogs, you shouldnā€™t be driving 70 mph anymore and so wonā€™t need to see hundreds of yards down the road. The...
  14. Midland MicroMobile 15w GMRS Install

Is the same as using a ground plane? Or it's just electrically grounded? From what I've read, GMRS antennas want a 12 inch in diameter or so ground plane to get the best signal. Mounting it on the edge of the hood doesn't fully accomplish that. Plus some of the signal could get blocked by the...
  15. Midland MicroMobile 15w GMRS Install

Iā€™m leaning towards this with the cooltech package. But I have a few questions Iā€™m hoping those with more knowledge can answer. 1. For those who cut a hole through the firewall where the clutch would go, do you seal it up with epoxy or anything after you run the wire? 2. There isnā€™t a great...
  16. What did you do TO your Jeep JL today?

You can buy replacement lenses in whatever pattern you like. Iā€™m not sure why they choose combo all the way around either. That seems like a lot of light up close. Too much light up close can make it harder to see further. Combo is an ok compromise when you only have 1-2 lights. but with 8, I...
  17. Diode Dynamics SS5 or Baja designs LP6

I was talking about my SS5ā€™s in particular. Although my SS3 for proā€™s also have a slight amount of spill, I would classify it as bleed though. For the SS5 beamshot pictures though, itā€™s probably an issue of the exposure of the camera. By allowing the hotspot to not be completely blown out, and...
  18. Diode Dynamics SS5 or Baja designs LP6

The LP9 puts out 12,547 lumens, and the LP6 does 11,225. Thatā€™s not really noticeable. For how much bigger it is I would expect more. Or maybe the LP6 is just that good.
  19. Diode Dynamics SS5 or Baja designs LP6

There is a pretty big difference between the Sport and the Pro for the SS5. I have two SS5 Proā€™s in the driving beam. I find that it has enough spill that I donā€™t wish for a flood on front. It just doesnā€™t have a super tight cutoff. Iā€™m not sure how the other beam shapes fair though.
  20. The San Rafael Swell from the driver's seat

I did a recent trip down to the San Rafael Swell in Utah. It was an ambitious trip, 300+ miles of dirt road over 3 days/2 nights. Plus the 3 hour drive to and from the Salt Lake City area. The area is usually pretty remote, however it just happen to coincide with the solar eclipse which meant...
