Bad head gasket? how much?

I believe I heard it's around an 18 hour job, and the gasket itself is ~$120.

I did mine myself, took about 25 hours to do both of them, and I also found out my camshaft were toast.

4 cams, 24 lifters, 24 rockers, 2 head gaskets, spark plugs, coolant, oil cooler, having heads machined and some other small misc stuff was about $3300 to do the job myself.

What's the latest with the camshafts? Are they available again? I've stopped following that whole debacle.

They have an intake cam kit now. Came with the cam, lifters, rockers, valve cover gasket and rtv. I ordered both intake cam kits, and the exhaust cams with supporting hardware back in November and had them all in about a week.

I have my 2021 unlimited sport 3.6 in the shop with blown head gasket. 62500 miles on it. Oh...by the way...I purchased it with 60500 miles on it, from a dealer I've trusted since 2014.

Just another note that those liquid tester kits are not always accurate. I bought one and when I tested the color never changed. When I was eventually able to get a camera down into the cylinders there was oil in there so the head gasket had blown.

Yes, I had the opposite experience. The dealer who replaced my radiator under warranty said their block test showed no head gasket leak. It wasn’t listed on any paperwork. I did my own block test with the same brand of test kit and it showed a leak. So I went back and said I need a test to be documented on my paperwork.

The technician who appeared disgruntled that I wanted proof, sent me a video proving the engine was up to temp and the block test showed no leak.. I swore at the end of the video I could just see him starting to raise his middle finger.

Are you losing oil as well? Possible it’s the oil cooler?

Well I don’t want to jinx myself but correct no leak.

i think i smell coolant and my coolant is running low. this might be bad. i have one of those liquid testers but haven’t used it yet. perhaps tomorrow night? if this is a head gasket, what’s the ballpark figure on having a dealer fix it? and if i want them to do the plugs while they’re in there? how much will that tack on?

they fail VERY commonly in the 55-70k range. was probably fine when you purchased it.

5k. There’s an answer. With new heads, maybe 6500. In California, call it 7.

Thx. I rec'd the price today from the shop. Insurance will cover all but $1550.00 (approximately) my part. I also purchased the Dorman aluminum oil filter housing for preventative maintenance. Along with royal purple 0w-20w. Another $350.00. This is why I understand now what J.E.E.P stands for.

Do not use the dorman. Use an new OEM unit. The design has been updated
