Very, very common for the upgraded 3.6L. We're seeing 2-3 a week at my shop, mainly in grand cherokees. They usually blow between 50k-75k if they're going to blow. In nearly all cases we're getting them good willed if they're outside of warranty so long as it isn't too far out time wise. I believe we've also started leaning into just doing engines instead of the head under warranty, because you replace one side and the other side blows 5-10k later and it's a headache.

This is also why aftermarket warranty companies are horrendous. We know without a shadow of a doubt what the issue is, yet they want meaningless tear down in hopes you decline the tear down.
How far out is not too far out for the good will warranty? I May be in this same boat, 12 months out on time but just under on miles. 59K

I've seen them good willed up to around 70k miles or so, so long as it's not out by time. Time needs to be within a few months of expiration.

My blown head gasket was at just over 52k miles and 13 days past 5 years. The dealer didn't want to goodwill it and used the extended warranty company. I'll end up paying $100 deductible for a MOPAR reman engine. I'm ok with that as it was the path of least resistance and it's only $100. The sucky part is today is 9 weeks the dealer has had the Jeep. The engine arrived a few days ago and now they are waiting for the gasket set.

The dealer will make significantly more money on the repair than if they went through the process of good willing it. The technician working on your vehicle will also be happier about doing the job. Imho $100 well spent.

Thanks for the info! Now if the gasket set would show up! When I stopped by on Tue the service writer looked and said he didn't have an eta for it. Do you know if there is a problem getting the gasket set? Thanks.

I'm assuming they mean the timing cover gasket set? It's like... two seals? Valve cover gaskets? Oil filter adapter gaskets? ..RTV? All that is readily available. I honestly have no idea what gaskets they're thinking of if they're just replacing the engine.

I assume they mean the long block replacement gasket set, it’s almost always back orderered. The individual seals are readily available. They’re just being stupid, or delaying the job intentionally.

Thanks mwilk012 and alphawolff, when the advisor said he was waiting on the gasket set I asked if it was for the manifolds, valve covers and oil pan. He said yes, so I just assumed it was for all the items they have to move over from the old engine.

I wasn't even aware they packaged it as a set. We've always just ordered everything individually. Hell, we usually have it all in stock.

That set seems silly, especially with those missing seals. A lot of those gaskets can be reused without issue, too. The intake gaskets were specifically designed to be reused on the PUG engine if not obviously deteriorated. The metal EGR tube and exhaust manifold gaskets are usually fine as well.

Really surprises me a dealer would order this set. Most just stock all the gaskets individually anyway

It’s a pretty good excuse though if you just don’t have the manpower to get the job done for another week or two.

Bringing this thread back up - @alphawolff do you know the cause of these head gasket failures? 50K-75K seems awful low for this kind of failure.

Is it the coolant eroding the coating in the gasket? Is it due to the different metals - head being aluminum and the gasket multi-layer steel?

Would coolant flush every 30K help?

Running theory is under torqued head bolts at the factory. I do not believe it's a part quality issue are they consistently fail within this range IF they fail. If you get outside this range the chances are yours won't fail under normal operating conditions.
