Well messed up my post....LOL. Maybe because I wanted to give a shout out to wb880 and XTrooper for this thread!!

I picked up my 2018 Rubicon JL and the Steering is FIXED!!!! I followed the messages and printed out TSB 08-092-18 and gave it to my Dealer. After struggling since May with this Jeep, I too can drive it without grasping the wheel!!!

Thank you again and if you are struggling with your Jeep still, make them flash it!

Out of curiosity, when was your jeep built? The TSB indicates the Jeep applies to those build before March 2018...mine was built in July but I still have the issue. I took to the dealer today and the mechanic stated that they cannot "flash" the system unless there is a "bolt"...anyone know what this means?
RSSNASCAR- My JL was built on 4/4/2018 0300 hours......

Just to iterate again... I had the TSB 08-092-18 update done on mine over week ago and it changed nothing. Same dead zone, wheel correction, wandering in lane.

After getting the vehicle I lowered the psi down to 36. I also checked all 4 ball joint castle nuts. They were good.

Build date: 2-14-18 1400 hrs

For all of you guys saying the dealer said there’s no steering issue or it doesn’t apply to your JL, please see the actual letter attached to show them directly. It shows which ones are affected. This should be plain as day for the dealer since it’s directly from Jeep/Mopar. Hope his helps!

Mine was built after May 8th, so the dealer will not do it.

I wish there was a way to find out what "flash version" our JLs have. That way you can find out if your vehicle already has the updated flash so it already has the update. Why are version numbers for software on JLs such a secret?

I ordered my Jeep on March 30th and it was delivered to me on May 17th. I had it in the shop twice before seeing the post by Wb880. The dealer tried to pass me off with the excuse that I was use to driving a Summit!! Needless to say I shut them down on that!! I printed out the TSB and told my dealer to flash it, per the TSB. They, the dealer, did the flash and neither the service tech or my service manager noticed any changes. Funny thing is that it took the steering ratio from 0 to -8, just as Wb880 and XTroop said. I was shocked by the change. I live in Tulsa and let’s just say yesterday we had a major storm roll through and my Rebicon handled it perfectly!!! Neither the wind nor the 18 wheelers pushed me around on the road, the Jeep held its own!!

I don’t know how you can get your “flash” done, but direct them to the forms and print out the TSB. It won’t hurt them to “try” it! Just make sure they try it and if you had it done and it’s still wandering.. take it to another Jeep dealership and tell them to do it.

I had this done to mine, it does turn down how much electronic help the hydraulic steering gets but it doesn’t fix the play in the steering box. It’s just a bandaid to keep you from having to deal with the loose steering as often by keeping if from drifting with every slope and bump in the road. It’s a software update it won’t fix a hardware problem. I have exactly the amount of play I had before I’m just not having to wrestle with it as much. I’m still working with Jeep cares so we’ll see from what I’ve read there’s supposed to be an improved steering box but I’ve also seen people on here have it replaced with no improvement. Not particularly optimistic at this point.

I have an assigned case manager from Jeep and I brought this pic into the dealership for my appointment today. My Jeep did not fall under the criteria as the build date was after May 8th so the service adviser said that they are not technically applying the TSB but they reconfigured the computer the same way. Unfortunately, this did NOT fix my problem...no difference at all. I also had them check all the ball joints and steering components for tightness and they said they were all good (I am still gonna recheck them myself though).

So I am disappointed but I knew it was a long shot. Adjusting the steering box should fix this issue but the dealers are unable to do it since the adjustment screw strips. I may try the method with locking pliers and turn it myself.

Cheers

What is the exact steering symptom? Did they loosen the steering control arms and re-torque them to spec? Supposedly they are over tightened at the factory. And did they drive it and agree there is a problem or did they claim the typical "it's a Jeep thing"?

How did you get your dealership to apply the flash update? I am having the sloppy steering problem and first noticed it driving it home on the freeway after buying it. I have had my JL for one day, with it being at the dealership for the last 5 days now. They checked alignment, said it was fine, said they would not apply the TSB since my VIN did not fall under that category. Jeepcares has told me the same thing that they will not apply the TSB since it does not apply to my VIN.

What next?

Call the Jeep JL hotline at 866-362-2146. I called them this morning. They said if the vehicle was manufactured between October 30, 2017 and on or before May 8, 2018 and was made in the US, then TSB # 08-092-18 applies to ALL VINs MFG in that date range. They will create a case and get the dealer to implement the TSB. Be sure to use words that include you feel your safety is at risk, if you feel that way. What is your MFG date according to the VIN?
