Recently sold my 2018 JLU Sport S (original owner, V6, M200/186 axles, 2" Mopar lift, 80k miles, 3.45s—poor mileage and it drove like a three legged camel). Took it everywhere from Pismo Beach to Hell's Revenge and Blackbear Pass to Midtown Manhattan.

I’ve wanted a 392 since launch and cannot think of any other vehicle I'd get instead. Budget is ~$60–70k, and it’ll be my daily driver.

Questions
  1. Reliability / preventative steps
    • What are the known weak points on the 392 (clutch, engine)? How do I make sure it lasts?
    • Any “day-one” recommendations for a commuter setup (e.g., Tazer 2wd)?
    • Beyond frequent fluid changes, what else actually moves the needle on long-term reliability?
    • What should I look for on a used one beyond making sure everything works?
    • What is the warranty situation on buying a used one?
  2. What to buy (model year/options)
    • Any years or production changes to target/avoid? ('21 oil pan?)
    • Do any of the 392 model years come with that idiotic CA compliant ESS dual battery setup?
    • Will be getting a one-touch, but not sure between XR vs. non-XR for daily use: is the real-world height gain of ~1–1.5" actually worth it?
I've read quite a few forum posts on these issues but I figured things can change over time as the vehicles go up in age and mileage. I'm thinking this cannot possibly be less reliable than my previous Jeep which was leaking worse than a cheap dishwasher?

I'm also thinking if I treat this one well it will be reliable? Thanks in advance for any first-hand experience or buyer tips.

-i wanted the XR for the 4.56 gears because. just because
-only have 11k miles on mine. no issues.
-if you want one, buy it, you can always sell it

My 21 has been very reliable, just one self imposed issue. But- take it out of 4-auto when off pavement - hard surfaces or excessive clutch wear with result, this is the weak point. XR and non are the same height, XR preferred but if you find a non XR cheap enough because it isn’t one don’t sweat it. The main difference is just gears, tires, spare relocation, flare extensions, 1/2” wider wheels. I XR’d my pre XR for about the same cost as the XR option minus the wheels. Had I burned off the 33’s needing tires anyway before replacing it would have been cheaper. One battery. My late July early August build has the aluminum pan but if you are in a CARB state 21’s don’t have “additional California emissions equipment” I’ll take it , the emissions equipment can’t be changed. Get a NoLimitz JL to disable MDS (other features) to help avoid the notorious Hemi lifter-cam issues (ie Hemi Tick) BTW- it pulled the 35’s fine with the 373’s, 4.56’s wanted not needed. Thirsty in town, not so bad Fwy- ~14 at 70/75 16 if I keep the speed down :CWL:

Most common problem seems to be the transfer case. It uses automatic clutch packs for engagements and if you get Service 4wd code and feel front locked in say a parking lot or u-turn, it’s the transfer. Happened to me, and others, and Jeeps replaced with no issue and works fine since. Biggest complaint seems to be drone in 4cyl mode, get a NoLimitz to disable. Only height difference is due to OEM tire size between XR and non. I would also say the hood is very heavy so adding the Redline hood lift kit is worth it.

Otherwise any other concerns or issues will be immediately dismissed once you drive one, it is a whole different world than non-392 JLs.

Thanks all for the tips. What's the best way to check the condition of the transfer case/clutch when buying a used one? I've never done due diligence into a used car, what do y'all recommend doing? I'm going to have to negotiate over the phone then fly out to finalize the sale because I'm looking for a one-touch white/silver.

I've owned a 21 non-xr and now a 24 XR (all 24+ are XR from the factory).

Get the XR. The gearing difference makes a WORLD of difference. The transmission has completely different shift logic and doesn't bog down like the non-XR version did.

If you buy a non-XR you pretty much have to get the TCM & PCM tuned to disable MDS and fix the transmission shift timings. It's REALLY bad from the factory. We're talking 8th gear at like 35 mph bad.

You think it bogs down even if you stick with the stock 33s? (32.4s or whatever)

Yes. The transmission is tuned VERY economically, and wants to get into as high gear as possible ASAP. The XR version does not use this casual shift timing and properly holds gears as needed.

The livernois TCM tune on my non-XR 21' with stock 33s made an absolute world of difference. The stock shit timings were absolute horrendous. If you get a non XR, I'd say it's almost a hard requirement.

How many miles & how do you drive it? I say I'm going to be nice to it, but I'm sure I'll launch it at least once a day.

I drive the shit out of mine. It really loves those 4-5k rpm shifts.

Mine is in the shop (warranty replacement from Jeep) for a new transfer case right now. I've been running 2wd for a couple of months now.

On 37's with the 4.56's, 3-link long arm, and it's been rock solid other than the transfer case which I was expecting. I bought mine used with 29k miles (saved about $35k buying used). It had never been offroad.

Don't hesistate to pull the trigger. It just drives the way you want a wrangler to drive. I concur with buying the XR over the non-XR, for sure.

How long did the transfer case last? What were the signs it was toast? Did it still run when it was fried? Wouldn't running it in 2wd from the tazer decrease its life expectancy since everything is calibrated to run in AWD on pavement?

Not driven a lot, but yes, I used OR+ consistently too raise the shift points before getting a post XR PCM and recalibrating with a Tazer. If you have a happy foot well, this will result 😁

I don’t care, I got it too enjoy.

edit- dealer flashed the new PCM with an XR code, but it didn’t recal for gears and tires. Different computer, aftermarket recommended to clear (flash cleared at least temporarily) “Service 4WD” - “output shaft speed-wheel speed”

It lasted about 40k miles for me.

It was likely abused before I bought it, but I was OK with that since it wasn't taken off-road. (Not a single scratch on anything underneath).

One day, the transfer case popped backing out of the garage. After that, the SERV 4WD light came on and I was in 2WD ever since. The little motor attached to the transfer case grenaded. Dealer drained and cleaned what they could, serviced the case, ordered the part, and it's at the dealer now since the new case showed up this morning.

It's running in 2WD because it's broke. I didn't use the Tazer for that function.

Edit: I loathe the dealer and their business model, but a warrantied case is worth it to let them touch it. I offered to remove the case myself and just swap it out with the new one but this dealer wouldn't allow me to do that. My old dealer in NC would, this one in CO...said no.

Not taken off road and yet the TC failed,
not reassuring.

Yeah, I think it just comes down to hammering on the throttle all the time. Especially, if you live in a snowy place. The clutches are working all the time.

I took it on a 8 day offroad trip a few months ago without issue. Performed great.

I think it took just one good launch with the 37's and that was it. Lol.

Atlas is already in the future. It's just nice to get a new factory case while I still can.
