I know with my JK there were times I could shift into 4H and/or 4L while totally stoped and other times I would have to be rolling somewhat. Think that it has to do with syncing the gears, if they are not “lined up” as far as meshing it would difficult to shift.

Suggest that you use 4H prior to entering any terrain so that this doesn’t happenin the future. In addition for those with the MT, from what I understand one shouldn’t depress the clutch when in water that deep as water can enter the transmission when the clutch is in. At least that was the word on the street for the JK’s. I’m no mechanic so if others on here know better feel free to correct this
Yep, it was definitely on the job training!
If I hadn't have pressed in the clutch while in that deep of water, I would have had to be pulled or towed out. I kept the engine running to keep as much water out of the tail pipe as I could, and as soon as 4H engaged, I put 'er in first gear and out she came and no ill-effects so far, thank goodness!

Well.... nice footage.... I saw some birds laughing, what was that all about? Man, glad you got out, I would have freaked out!
Thanks Cristina! Yeah, those birds were probably saying, "Hey!!! Look at that idiot!!! He got his dumb ass stuck!"
And there was a brief second where I did freak out a bit. Only because if I couldn't get out, I'd have to call my dad to come pull me out!! Hahaha! So, since I didn't like that option, I kept fiddle-fartin' with the 4WD.... and out she came! And believe it or not, I made several more passes through that water but left her in 4H and had no problem.
And, no, I have not told my parents I got stuck! Lol!

Ok, here's a question:
How many of you have tried to put your JLs into 4H and 4L? Have you had trouble getting it into 4-wheel drive?
I got stuck in about 29 inches of water the other day and sat there for a little over 2 minutes trying to get Stormie into 4H... she just wouldn't go.
Finally, I got it in 4H and she hopped right out like she was saying, "What the hell took you so long!?"
I was actually recording with my GoPro, so I got it on video. I've edited one minute out of it since it was just me sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do if I couldn't get out!!! Here's the video. You can see me go down and start to sink! If there was ever an "Oh shit!" moment, that was it for me!
And here's a shot of Stormie after she got me clear of the water trap! Look closely and you can see the water line on the door! My interior only got a little bit of water in it, too. I was surprised that my whole Jeep didn't fill up since the water level was way up past my doors! Good thing I had my doors on!!!

Great video and great shot as always. Glad you made it out!

So, shameless plug...not for me personally, but for a company that I think is doing a great job making accessories for us Jeeples. So much so that i reached out to them to offer my unicorn as a test vehicle and for measurements for new 2-door products. (They are in San Jose...not far from me.) Met up with their designer and co-founder Rob on Tuesday. He spent a lot of time taking pics and measurements, and a bit of video of me using my grab-handles to use in promotional content. Anyway, super nice and talented guy, great company, fantastic products..and hopefully some cool 2-door JL specific stuff in the near future...check them out:

And here's a quick, unedited snippet of me in my JL....The top is in a kind of weird (sunrider+safari) position because I didn't notice at the time (we had been taking a lot of different measurements) so don't judge LOL!

Cool!
That's exactly how I always drive around! Sunrider/Safari mode is great! But be sure to use the included velcro straps when you ride that way. I know you were just posing for the video, but if you actually drive on the road like that the wind will really wreak havoc on the top in Sunrider mode if the bars aren't secured down with the straps.

Thanks Fred!
After getting over the initial scare, it was actually fun once I knew that she could handle the situation as long as I could get her into 4WD! Lol!

You’re in Savannah?!?!! That’s the only solo vacation I’ve ever taken & I was mesmerized by the beauty of it in one weekend. I’ve always wanted to go back! Such an amazing place!!!
Ha! Thank you! Our guest bedroom is always ready for friends!

Thanks Jeff! Yeah, I knew HOW to do it; she just wouldn't go into 4H for some reason. So I was just wondering if anyone else had played around in 4WD yet and if they had any trouble too.
Yeah, even the book says you can go into 4H at a dead stop or up to 40-45 mph. 4WD would be useless if you're already stuck and you always had to be moving to engage 4H.
After getting out of my stuck situation, I played around with it some more and 4H was a little easier but 4L was still a bear even going 3-5 mph.
The more you use it the easier it will be

yeah 4 lo is always tricky and even in the manuals of every 4x4 i have ever owned all said " a little gear noise while shifting into 4 lo is normal"

I was wondering about that too! When 4L would engage I thought it was loud! It didn't sound like a grinding of gears; it was more clunky sounding.

Yeah thats it not the same sound as when you grind transmission gears.
