Flipping someone the bird? That is just plain douchy.

The "non-waving" can be attributed to all the new Jeep owners who don't know the custom. Jeep advertising - both print and TV - could include a cheeky "Jeepers are Friendly. Don't Forget to Wave!" to help explain the tradition.

I grew up rural, we always waved to everybody-and we stopped if people had problems. I know I no longer always stop-I rarely stop if my family is with me, and while this is probably not politicaly correct here-I rarely stop if I am not carrying. Just a fact of life, too many friends have been mugged rendering aid.

All that said, the Jeep wave has really gotten me jaded. I have always waved a lot while driving (something my wife has called me on from time to time. But since I started driving a Jeep, I have yet to have a Jeep wave back. Most arround here are unlimiteds driven by former soccer moms, which I suspect is part of the problem. Probably calling the kettle black as the Jeep I am driving is my wife’s post minivan vehicle...
I grew. Up in the “sticks”, too. If you didn’t wave at somebody they would come over to see why you were mad.

The wave is like a smile, it’s free, doesn’t take any effort, and can shed a little sunshine into another person’s life

Passed an older wrangler today. Gave the the guy the friendly, "what's up" and he shot me the bird. For a second I had to check and make sure I wasn't driving a hummer or kia. I don't understand.
Maybe he's from NY... Shooting the bird is how they say "hello"... :)

I wonder how many accidents are preceded by self-absorbed drivers waving at one another. :stop:
Nah, better to be concerned with actual self-absorbed drivers who are too busy on their phones, regardless of make/model of vehicle they're driving. At least Jeep drivers who wave are actually paying attention to the road and other drivers around them.

I feel like giving up on waving since maybe 1 out of 10 here seem to wave back. But when they do they usually go out for more than the wave.

SCIENCE!

Would make sense that this number would be quite low, especially for the Jeep wave specifically. In order to successfully wave at another Jeep, you need to be aware of your surroundings and paying attention not only to the locations of other vehicles, but to details like make (this is probably why we have the trope of "soccer moms" not waving: they typically have a lot going on both within and without the vehicle, and aren't able to give that kind of attention to detail).

Eyes on the road, really paying attention, accidents go down. Unless you have a medical condition resulting in tunnel vision, looking at a vehicle in the opposing lane keeps your focus on road conditions maximized. And if you can't see a car in front of you or somebody on the shoulder when looking at somebody in the opposing lane, you probably shouldn't be driving. And should consult your doctor.

The original, “It’s a Jeep thing.” :)

I get the wave back about 90% of the time. That guy is a douche.

It goes with the saying "jeepers help jeepers". If a keeper is broken down on the road, you help them. If a keeper is stuck in mud or sand, you pull them out. A jeep is not just a vehicle, it is a lifestyle.
So if I see a Landrover broken down I don't help? Seems like a shitty lifestyle...

It's a vehicle, nothing special.

When did I say not to help other people? Actually not too long ago a bunch of jeepers and I went to the beach to hang out, and we practically spent the entire time pulling random people out.

It must be a location thing. I am in upstate SC and I *may* get 1 or 2 waves back out of 15 or so. It's so frustrating. I'm over here trying to be all friendly and whatnot.. Ha! Oh well, it won't stop me from continuing to wave!

Wear a bikini top with the doors off... I'm sure you'll get more waves... :)

Seriously though, some people might just be paying attention to their driving and not have a chance to look for other drivers to wave at.

Yeah, I know... Drivers paying attention to their driving these days... Radical concept, right? Well, it *might* happen... :)

My wife gets all kinds of waves when she drives my jeep around, and she has no idea why. She won't wave back because she's just not a jeep person. Some people don't get it, and that's too bad.

From the looks of your picture Jessie, you don't seem to still be in H.S. I am about to make a point relative to that, which is why I mention it; not to imply anything but the truth: you're very pretty and a heck of a lot prettier a woman than I am handsome a man: no flirtation, just complement meant. And I would definitely wave to you not based on gender, but because you are an independent adult.

That said, I live in an area--I say shamefully not as a matter of bragging--where it seems the average age of a Wrangler driver is, unlike most of the rest of the world, 18, and the rig has been purchased by parents. The other day a new driver/very young lady and her friend, and I'll assume them the nicest people on earth, passed with the doors (and practically their clothes) off. They are probably not familiar with the wave.

Pardon the double entendre, I may still wish at times that I had "Jessie's Girl," (a non descript young lady) @JessieGirl (a Rick Springfield reference) but I don't act upon it.;)

I didn't wave although I would have reciprocated one. In that case the pragmatic scenario of having to say, "but officer, waving to other Wrangler drivers is standard fare," was not worth trying to explain how I wasn't being flirtatious with young ladies my daughter's age.

Maybe I should have. If I couldn't see the occupants I would have. I almost invariable do.

My best wave, as it were, was changing parkways, on a "clover leaf" exit, on a beautiful day, top down, as another Wrangler with no top or doors, driven my a dude traveling in the opposite direction, with hair the rig could not contain, and music loud, simultaneously gave and got peace signs to/from me.

In a instant the sentiments, "this driver 'gets it' were conveyed."

I've said this before and I think it bears repeating. I think an excellent metric of the desirability of a community to live in is the percentages of Jeep Wavers.

They wave is more important than just showing regard for someone who gets the lifestyle and appreciates freedom, otherwise maximized by the Wrangler. It says, "I am not the center of the world, you matter too, I would help you if you were stuck, I'd hope you'd help me."

Think of wave's reciprocated as winning lottery tickets: You're happy when you get them, not surprised or much disappointed when you don't.

Aw, thank you! You're so sweet. You're dead on though. I'm definitely well out of my high school days. I'm in my 30's and the only money from my parents in the jeep is about $1.24 that my father left in there when I took him for his first ride. :cwl: I have noticed that a lot of Wrangler drivers are much younger these days and I probably should have assumed they just don't "get it." Don't get me wrong, I've gotten some great waves but you know how it is. You win some, you lose some. ;) That being said, if we are ever to cross paths, I'll definitely be waving at you @RussJeep1! :like:
