Looking to build and purchase a 2022 Willys. Not looking to do any extreme off roading but do like the looks of the 35" tires with at least 1.5" lift.

Debate is between the xtreme recon package v stock tires with modifications at a later date. Opinions and recommendations are welcome.

Welcome to the Forum, from Cave Creek AZ.
Since you want it, then why not just get the extreme Recon Package, with the Willys.

Thats what I ordered, Willys XR. It also comes with D44 axles front and rear which is a big upgrade, 4.56 gears, upgraded brakes and suspension, and upgrade spare tire carrier for the bigger tires. So, its a lot more than just a lift and tires, I think its a great package for the price. I dont plan on doing any rock crawling or crazy stuff, but having the extra capability right out of the box is very nice.

the XR package gets you pretty much what i built the hard way, but for less money than it cost me.

i think it looks like a good value, and is probably what i would be ordering now if i were doing it over again. (it wasn’t an option when i built my 2021.)

If you like the look of the 35s and a slight lift, definitely do the XR package. You get so much more for your money, rather than just building it later. By the time you buy 35s and wheels for a stock rig, you will already be within 1k of the 4K XR option price. Basically then for the remaining 1k left from the wheels and tires, you will get D44 axles, bigger breaks, better gearing, a small lift, and a reinforced tailgate....all under factory warranty. And will be more than capable for even moderate offroading. Wheels/tires/gearing aftermarket will set you back 6k at least on their own.

Also, I think the orders now are for the 23MY but can always double-check with your dealer. I see you are in NC based on the info to the left, if you are there still, there are tons of dealers in the SE doing really good discounts on new vehicles so I would shop around for the one nearest you. There is a list on the forums with all the dealers also.

Agreed with everyone suggesting to do the XR package. Too many people online are saying the package isn't worth it for "just 35" tires and a lift," but when you really look at all the extra goodies, plus the fact its under warranty, there's no beating it. The only debate would be if you plan on upgrading all those XR features any time soon.... which it doesn't sound like you are.

I love my Xtreme Recon package. You get so much for the money. Way more then most people even realize. Things like Iron steering knuckles over the standard aluminum. Heavy duty Dana 44 axles that are thicker then the standard Dana 44s for example. It's way more then just the lift and tires. He'll the 4.56 alone make it worth while. There's a pretty long list of big upgrades you get. It's definitely worth it. Plus your Jeep will looks so much more bad ass. ?

I have an order in for a JLUR-XR (ETA July 20!!!) and I readily admit that the axles and steel knuckles alone sold me!

Same here. The axles, the gearing, tye bigger brakes. It would honestly cost 3 times what the option costs to do what you get in the XR without including the lift.

They're not 10mm thicker than Rubicon axles, they are 10mm thick vs 7mm for the Rubicon. So they are 3mm thicker. A larger diameter with the same thickness is far stronger than a thicker wall at the same diameter, but it's more cost efficient to not have to manufacture new brackets for a larger tube. This is where the aftermarket is known for giving more bang for the buck vs factory options. Spending more for aftermarket upgrades will yield a better finished product than oem.

I ment they're 10 mm versus the standard. Just said it wrong.

I ignored the same exact wording in another thread, but benefit of the doubt went out the window when I saw it again.

Congrats on your Gobi Willys!

I'll second the other post saying they did it the hard way and would have gone the XR if it was an option.

My journey:

21 JLU Willys Sport. XR package was not an option for me when I purchased, but I've tried to work my way towards a poor mans version b/c I like that style and amount of lift...

The two main problems with my strategy were (1) I'm pretty sure I've spent way more money doing it the hard way and (2) I still have the 3.45 gears, and depending on what you read, that may not be acceptable depending on tire size and personal preference.

At present:
  1. Toyo 34" AT3s (285/75/17) and Tazer for correction
  2. 1.75" wheel spacers from spidertrax
  3. teraflex spare relocation bracket
  4. Eibach 1" springs and teraflex 0.5" spacers (Clayton 1.5" springs probably a better option)
  5. Fox 0-1.5" shocks
  6. Hawk LTS break pads all around
  7. Front upper and lower control arms
  8. Random other things that arn't related to the suspension/tires
Buying the tires retail was $$$ and I didn't get much for my KM2s selling slightly used. Also, it took two visits to the shop for the lift b/c of poor planning (also $$$).

So... I'm happy, but starting with the XR package and going from there would have been much easier and saved me money.

TLDR: get the XR package

In the end the point is the same regardless. The Xtreme Recon has thicker Dana 44 axles then the standard Rubicon Dana 44 axles. Most don't realize this. They think they're the same. That's all I was trying to pass on. ?‍♂

Thanks. I'm definitely enjoying my Gobi Willys XR. ?

Note that the XR package on a willys is roughly 3.5" taller than the standard willys height. if you can afford it the XR is worth the money. comes with more than just the lift and wheels and tires. bigger breaks, better gearing, tailgate reinforcement, stronger axles and a couple other smaller things
