On my special-order XR, I decided to skip the safety packages, navigation, and forward camera. Obviously, I understand that these things all have their place. Active safety is great in many circumstances, but I use my Jeeps primarily for overlanding, where the technology doesn’t really come into play. Same with NAV; I prefer aftermarket solutions. And I’ve never been sold on the front camera. Tried it on a Gladiator; didn’t love it.

So I wound up ordering a $60k+ Jeep without a lot of technology options. Probably a weird build, but I’m curious if others have taken a similar path?

(To be clear: I’m not judging anyone else’s choices. We all have our reasons! Just trying to figure out how weird my build might be.)

Did you skip the leather? That is for sure something that makes no sense pricewise, for a dedicated off roader.

You're right, the safety packages are more aptly named on-road safety packages. If you're always off road their usefulness is moot. I did get them though, the logic being that I'm more used to off-road than on-road. So any on-road help I can get can't hurt. I do appreciate them when I'm in the more awkward on-road environment.

I never had a forward facing camera but once I got used to a rear facing camera I found it quite helpful. I'm sure there's a learning curve before a front camera is helpful as well. I've also never seen an OEM NAV that didn't suck. Aftermarket is not only better, you can change it if something better comes along.

But hey, that's what Jeeps are all about. Make it how you need it. You don't need permission.

So true. Ford only offers “packages” on the Bronco, and they stack on top of one another. Mid > High > Lux. Even if you only want one thing in the Lux package, you have to buy all the other stuff in the other packages.

I strongly prefer Jeep’s more a la carte approach.

So do I. My dealer thought my options were strange too. I got the white painted hard top but not the painted fenders. But there's a method to my madness. White paint reflects desert sun while black heats up like a skillet. I want a white hard top to keep the cabin cool but I don't care if fenders heat up and unpainted fenders don't show scrapes as much. The black & white also looks better IMO. The dealer said he thought it would look strange but it actually works.

But that isn't what everyone needs so get what works for you. Jeeps are awesome that way.

I got every option aside from LED headlights and front-cam on my Sahara Altitude (figuring those are easy/cheaper to get aftermarket).

I'm more of a road tripper and I live in Texas, so my build is more focused on "I'm likely to need to drive a few hours to the trail, so I should be comfortable doing so". Plus it's my daily driver to take my daughters to school.

I've also been driving an '07 GMC for the past ~14 years, which obviously had none of these things. So I wanted to treat myself a little. :)

The only thing I really kinda hate is the front-collision. I was thinking it would be like my wife's Lexus RX350, where it shows onscreen how close I am to hitting something. Instead, it functions more like an invisible and entirely unnecessary "oh shit brake", typically engaging itself if someone is turning into a parking lot and I'm coming up behind them. *I* know that I'm not going to hit them, but the Jeep freaks out and slams the breaks. Happened 2x before I found the button to disable it.

The Adaptive Cruise can be kinda similar - it's MUCH more conservative than I normally would be, and takes a little too long to recognize when vehicles have entered or exited the lane in front of me, but overall, it's pretty awesome.

I haven't purchased yet, but I was looking at getting an XR Rubicon and the only option I was going to add was the hardtop and cold weather package. I don't need the other stuff. I want a very simple and basic Jeep.

It hasn't triggered like that for me yet. Where it usually gets me is cyclists in a bike lane. They're not in my lane, I'm not going to hit them. The Jeep is not so sure about that. I found all I need to do is press the accelerator ever so slightly to indicate that I see the cyclist and all is OK. Once I started doing that the Jeep never freaked out.

Yep. That’s why I went with a Willys Sport, mine’s stripped down even more than yours…crank windows, manual door locks and no safety nanny assistance. It’s a Jeep not a lifeless Tesla! ?
Congrats on your order.

Look at the tow package which includes a bigger alternator and auxiliary switches. Best bang-for-the-buck option out there. Even if you don't plan to tow anything g, it's a great mount for bike racks or cargo carriers.
