Hard top wind noise

I would wager a lot of buffeting/whistling issues could be corrected if people just try readjusting their freedom tops OR, and I know this isn't the most desirable thing for some, just taking the entire hard top off and then putting it back on.

Once you do that, you'll see how there are just tons of little spots with gaskets where the factory could have laid part of the hard top a wrong way or cinched the gasket or something, and even the smallest-seeming mistake could result in what you're hearing.

It's worth a shot!

Especially as fast as they're slapping these together with the pressure of high demand. "Just get them put together and let the dealerships worry about the rest, come on hurry up". I can only imagine what the line workers are hearing from upper management.

I am sitting at the dealer right now for excessive wind noise on the driver side front in my JLU Sahara with less than 800 miles on it. At first they said it was a Jeep thing and I promptly responded with "BULL$HIT", fix it. An hour went by and they came and got me. This time they acknowledged that it is an issue and to their surprise Jeep asked that they be contacted by the technician about the issue. So obviously Jeep knows about the issue. I have yet to hear what Jeep has told the technician. All I have been told is that the number they have been asked to call is someone's desk at Jeep. Curious what that number is.

I have also noticed that one of my panels is misaligned. It is the passenger side cowling. I think it is plastic, but painted. It is held down with 4 torx screws. I wonder if it is related?

So this is fun. The dealer was given a number to call from a mysterious person from Star Chrysler. When called the other end says "all circuits are busy right now, please try again later". The dealer called them every hour for the rest of the day. They still got that message. The dealer reached out to Chrysler and they did not know who the person or number was about. The person's name at Star Chrysler is "Ron", I will try to get the number when I go to the dealer to pick up my Jeep.

Since the dealer is in the dark on this issue they did some good ole fashioned detective work with duct tape. They taped up various areas around the Driver's side door and windshield and test drove it. They discovered that the windshield seal is the issue.

The next fun thing, they do not know if the windshield falls under warranty and are trying to figure that out right now. This whole situation is bat$hit crazy. Does anyone from Jeep read these forum posts? If so, ping me and I will give you a contact at the dealership that is working the case. The fact that they are in the dark and Chrysler does not know anything.......

I've dealt with Chrysler before in 05, warranty issues. It was not pleasant to say the least. Not expecting anything better this time around.

Are you referring to the actual glass seal in the frame?

So if I understand correctly, the glass is adhered to the frame and also uses a seal around the glass. The JK did not have an extra seal around the glass, it was simply adhered to the frame.

I can't seem to find this seal on mopar parts site. Found the frame and the glass diagrams.

Not sure what your wind noise is but mine has a wind leak that makes the inside of the Jeep sound like a rear window is down. This causes pressure on my ears and I have to consistently pop my ears. So far only my efforts to improve.

Lol, under what circumstance would the windshield NOT be covered under warranty? (unless it's been replaced already)

That said, you've got a good tech working on it to take the time to tape off areas, test drive it and remove portions in order to locate the noisy area, buy him a beer or a coke or something.

Dropped mine off this morning with a page of really very minor issues and some are intermittent as well. I told them "It's a Jeep thing" won't cut it, I had a 2017 JK Rubicon Recon with none of the problems this JL has so far.

They had their shop foreman come up and we went over everything on the list and it took a while. Told him I appreciated him spending the time for me to explain everything and he said that it really helps them in resolving the issues, instead of just getting the Jeep sent back with service advisor notes. I've got a good feeling that they'll give it their best shot at making it as good as can be. He also told me they are pretty much learning as they go on the JL's, being a new model.

My Jeep was so loud at highway speeds with wind rushing noise, especially in a headwind, that at times you couldnt carry on a conversation with someone in the back seat. On a long trip, it was tiring. It's ALWAYS windy in Oklahoma so having a tailwind makes it not too bad, having a headwind sounded like the windows were down. I know..... its just a Jeep thing and I should be driving a Prius, but I guess my Recon was just a pussified version because it was exactly as you would expect a Jeep to be regards the noise, there was a normal amount but nothing excessive or to the extent it hindered speaking on my phone or talking to a passenger. If the JL can end up like that, I'm happy.

First time poster here, I’ve been lurking in the JL wrangler forums for months now, since before the initial JL reveal in November eagerly anticipating the new model.
I previously owned a TJ with a soft top, so when I went and test drove a new JL I was obviously much more impressed. I did notice some wind noise on the test drive, but chalked it up to the “it’s a Jeep thing.” But after driving it 700 miles, the wind noise is still bugging me. It’s a JLU sport with a hard top, and no headliners.
Yesterday I taped off the seals around the windshield, and didn’t really notice any reduction of wind noise. So then I folded the windshield and adjusted the hinges up 1/16th of an inch like was suggested in an earlier post. I’m still noticing excessive wind noise, coming from what sounds like the top of the windshield seam.
My next plan is to tape off literally every seam and try to narrow it down. I feel more mechanically inclined than some of the mechanics at the dealership I’ve talked to, so I would rather pinpoint the issue myself and then take it in. Has anyone else been able to narrow any generalized area of wind noise origin?

So far I can only recall one member that did as you with sealing off around the windshield. They had found the whistle issue with one side of the windshield where you could see it was not centered entirely perfect.

I have not seen that member come back and update as to whether he was able to get the windshield pulled and set correctly or not. That is the only one I recall so far.

I've said it before but I just can't believe that none of the testers brought this up this during the 4 million miles of testing. I can sort of forgive the Uconnect glitches since its software based and perhaps not in final form during testing but wind noise is something they should notice and report.

My guess is that there was someone in the passenger seat taking notes from the driver. And missed the comments regarding wind noise because it was too loud in the cabin.

I’ve got an appointment on Tuesday for it. We’ll see what they say. I’ll try to see if I can narrow the noise. Comparing my Jeep seals to the dealer pictures listed earlier, everything seams to be properly fitted, but maybe a Jeep specialist can tell.

I love the JL, but the wind sounds when I’m driving as if I’m going 100mph but I’m actually doing 65. I’m wishing I would have just got a soft top now and then I wouldn’t even have a problem!

Ok, I was able to capture some more hard top wind noise. I've said from day one, that : this noise I experience is only in notable crosswinds, I've also stated that Maryland has been ridiculously windy for the past 2 months. The other on a short trip, I was driving/heading Southwest in a heavy west wind (sustained 20 with +30mphs gusts). After the video, I returned in the opposite direction NE (same highway) and no noise! It's always, driver side only, I move the phone around to try and figure out location (couldn't) and I'm trying to keep the speaker on the phone closest to the pillar. I do show my speed occasionally for informational purposes. Watch the whole video! it gets really good at about 1:30. Turn off "auto rotate" so you can landscape your phone to watch in wide-screen.
