I know the manual says 87 octane, but it’s says a lot of things. lol
Has anyone had better performance with a different octane? Mine seems to idle a little rough (No spikes in RPMs) with 87. It could be cheap gas, breaking in (only 250 miles so far), or just how the engine runs, having never owned one I have no baseline to compare it to other then my 4 cylinder car. Thanks.

Well, at least one person thinks so:

My not so humble opinion is that a fool and his money are soon parted.

Octane, brand of oil, and catch cans are all rabbit holes that are almost as deep as Sport vs. Rubicon. Enjoy!

I run super or 92 octane, my Rovers require it and figure why not run it in the jeep.

I run 89 all the time and notice less pinging and slightly better performance along with maybe 5% better mpg. I'll spend $10 extra a month at fill up for that tradeoff.

I have used Shell 87 octane since buying my JLUR and have not noticed any pinging or loss of power. I also add Gumout All in One every 3,000 miles.

From a different point of view, I rented a Sahara with the 2.0T last summer and ran 87 and 85.5 octane from Houston, TX to Sheridan, WY and back with no issues observed.

My thought is if a top tier brand is used, 87 octane is good enough for the 3.6L.

Under most conditions high octain is a waste of money for an engine designed for regular. Even IF you get better mpg is it enough to offset the extra cost?

Ours seemed to idle a bit rough when new as well but seems to have smoothed out with time. Perhaps it takes a bit of time for the ECM to "learn"?
