Hi. 2018 3.6L. 84,000 miles. 0w-20 since still under warranty.

I have onset of lifter clatter and a oil report showing 3x normal iron. No other elevated findings. No codes thrown or rough idle yet.

Is these two things enough to drop $100 for deductible for extended warranty evaluation for dealer to say yes/no to repair?

Yes. Based on the chatter alone. Get it on record as early as possible.

Completely agree. It's now scheduled.

Do you think they'll pull the covers to see cam damage directly?
Do you think they'll leave the engine fillet'd open waiting for the parts?

I was following the Jeep home last week and saw an occasional puff of blue smoke on take-off from a stop. I'm fearing scored walls.
Should I expect some kind of codes if I'm got even the slightest oil burn?

I appreciate learning from your experience with dealers on this.

I wouldn't stress too much until you have a diagnosis.

Stress!

I'd hate for my wrangler's engine to opened up at the dealer for the summer waiting for parts. Its why I ask. But I guess 'its all good' as they say nowadays.

But, yeah, let's get a Dx first. ;)

Ask shop for old parts. Most states have laws requiring shops to return parts to customer unless under warranty. Ask for a personal inspection or at least photos after valve covers removed.

I've noticed that lately some shops will send a video of the inspection and show the vehicle on the lift, parts that are worn or damaged, and a quick summary from the tech on what he found.

Follow-up. The dealer's tech took a long listen to the 85k mile engine. Both warm and cold. And then with a stethoscope. Looked thru the UOA report. Noted 2.5x average iron but heard nothing to indicate valvetrain problems - yet. Not enough to warrant cracking open the covers under warranty or charging me dx time.

Eh. Its enough for me to have had a tech with more stethoscope time than me listen to it. I'll just run her like she's one of the 90% that's OK and review the oil weight possibilities.

Thanks for the opinions. Nothing here to see yet.

If you notice the ticking sound and evidenced by oil report, you should have it fixed. I assume the sound noticeably get louder over 3000 rpm, correct?
I had this issues a few years back, brought into a dealer and the tech said he couldn't hear much ticking. I brought it in again after a few months and end up need to replace several rockers and a cam.
If you have an extended warranty, definitely get it fixed sooner than later.

the tech will hear the sound from 50 feet away. it's a very specific noise and if it's there it would've been written up for it. these are gravy jobs

Lofty, thank you for leaving this nightmarish pictorial in my mind. YES. I agree it needs to be done, even if only to do a cam upgrade. I am thinking of buying the Wrangler from my wife just to do right thing and not just watch her drive it into infinity griding that cam for its bearing-erosive powder. Maybe, its a good thing it sits in the garage for weeks on end.

Would you replace with like cam and/or lifter upgrade if possible?

My buddy bought the kit from the dealer for around 500 bucks and did the work himself. No issues since and it’s been a few months, and he daily drives it!

You can buy a $100 borescope on Amazon and pull the cam sensor out of the valve cover and see if you can wind your way over to the center cylinder intake lobe on the passenger side, since that's the most common lobe to fail.
