So jeep is not dependable if I understand properly. A good chunk of jeep owner over maintain their Jeep this is probably changing the value, you knowI had typed up a nice long reply about how you have to look at previous years for context for these rankings to actually matter...but then I realized that this is the "Vehicle Dependability Study" not the "Initial Quality Study".
The Initial Quality Study is the one you want - that's the study that shows how well a vehicle is built. The Dependability Study isn't really helpful because at the age they are looking at, reliability depends far more on how a vehicle was maintained than how it was built. This is an evaluation of owners, not manufacturers.

We already knew that. No one buys a Jeep for dependable transportation. So jeep is not dependable if I understand properly. A good chunk of jeep owner over maintain their Jeep this is probably changing the value, you know![]()
Well shit, guess my last roughly 20 years of depending on Jeeps for reliable transportation must not have actually happenedWe already knew that. No one buys a Jeep for dependable transportation.
It did, you are just over maintaining itWell shit, guess my last roughly 20 years of depending on Jeeps for reliable transportation must not have actually happened
There's a difference between "buying a Jeep for dependable transportation", which isn't smart, and having a Jeep turn out to be dependable transportation. The fact that the first is true does not mean that the second cannot be.Well shit, guess my last roughly 20 years of depending on Jeeps for reliable transportation must not have actually happened
So uhh, every 5-8k mi doing an oil change and changing the air filter when I realize oh shit it's been like 30k mi is over-maintaining?It did, you are just over maintaining it![]()

I definitely would say it being "not smart" is untrue. Buying a Jeep for dependable transportation is about as smart as buying most any other car for dependable transportation, since a Jeep really does tend to - in my experience - be pretty average for dependability (i.e. fairly dependable, like most other cars). My experience is with 5 separate Jeeps over the years ('01 XJ, '12 JK, '21 KL, '22 JL, '24 JT), so not a one off good one, and my luck's definitely not good enough to get a random lucky vehicle 5 times. There's a difference between "buying a Jeep for dependable transportation", which isn't smart, and having a Jeep turn out to be dependable transportation. There's also the not trivial difference between what Jeep guys consider dependable and what a lot of people from outside the Jeep world consider dependable.
