Yes and I had two of 4.0’s. When introduced it was pretty well respected.
I knew a guy that had a Cherokee pu with one. That bugger was pretty quick.
Things either disappear or evolve, hopefully only the worst things will disappear 😉

Edit: Jeep Comanche, not Cherokee. 🤪
The Comanche is the perfect example of my point as it was one of the quickest pickups of its day...at 10s 0-60. The bar was so low from the mid 70s to the mid 2000s that 10s 0-60 felt quick compared to the rest of the pack.

Let’s compare;
F-4 Phantoms to F-35’s
The first micro waves, home audio equipment, medical procedures, communications equipment, etc. Go back far enough, sometimes not very far and you will find quantum leaps in performance gaps between objects used today and in the past for obtaining similar results.
What did JEEPS have under the hood in the 80’s, 2.5, 4.2, even the 304 was a turd when compared to other engines back in the same time period.
Don’t blame AMC, the smog 304 was introduced with the same ~160 HP (net) as the Buick V6. (gross) But to be fair the base 75 Corvette 350 had 165 HP with a 205 HP “performance” option. It started creeping back up from there, Corvette ZR-1 achieved 375 HP in 90 with a Lotus designed, Mercury Marine produced engine. The Chevy 350 back up to 300 HP in 91

Maybe you're thinking they should be putting 30s on their 392s? They'd be faster and more economical!

Don't forget the off roading community is what drives the image of Jeep ownership. Take away that image and watch sales plummet. They're buying an image, which might be shocking to you, but it's not an image of cruising around mall parking lots.
I think most people just like the way a Wrangler looks and that's the only image they care about.
The reality is most Wranglers are used by college boys and girls, soccer moms and guys that just want a Wrangler. Just like any forum of any product the people on here are a small fraction of Jeep owners and in no way represent 90% of current Jeep owners or their lifestyle. If those people went away sales would tank and you would have to buy something else.
I'm currently following someone on YouTube traveling the country on backroads and visiting amazing places all in a V8 Volvo wagon.

Not blaming AMC, but there are a lot of jaded eyes on this forum.
How many people have, set an automatic choke, set the dwell on a set of points, adjusted the idle mixture screws on their carburetor?
My point is, it’s pointless to compare equipment and its capability from today’s stuff with yesterday’s stuff from 40, 50, 60 years ago.
And, the most potent small displacement AMC V8 was probably the 343. Trouble is/was a 390 was the same size externally.

I would bet that your definition of back roads and mine are vastly different.

Yep, Same block, I have been told the 401 is at the block’s max and can’t even be bored. Too bad.
Oh yeah- points plural, carbs plural, and you forgot adjusting lash for the solid lifters often. 😉

How many of you guys remember spraying starter fluid into the carb while your dad starts the car on a cold ass morning once upon a time? Dont miss that one bit! Been happy with Jeep and the eTorque system. It's fun to drive with the top back and sun on face an music playing cause it started right up without fuckin about.

Remember- it was required for the first daily start , but carried just in case it sat too long needing a shot during the day.

I sprayed plenty of starter fluid (either) in my JD 60 in Texas winters.
Hell, I bet u-joints last twice as long because of not getting shocked by a screaming engine with the choke stuck when shifting from park to drive or reverse! Also, anyone remember how many alternators were destroyed because of v-belts getting tightened too much!
2nd 392, ah but those Duntov 30-30’s sure did sound mean in a 327😉

Long ago, I decided to remove the OEM fuel injection system and install a pair of Weber 46 3 barrel carbs on a 6 cylinder engine because “race car” and “bad ass” but it really meant a lot of wasted time and pain in the ass.

Setting the dual points buried behind a 6-71 on a Chevy in a Willys Jeep was truly a blast. 🙄
I used to pull the distributor out and clamp it in the vice. Much easier!

But multiple carbs sound sooo nice.
I had a 421 with 3 duces and it sounded wicked!
