Not practical for those of us that have dash cams mounted near the rear view mirror.
Yes, mine is up by the mirror, and that wouldn't help. I did realize, thanks to you guys, that I do need a converter from 12v to 5 v.
I am way too drunk to comprehend anything right now, but I'm leaning toward just leaving this friggin thing plugged in and looking at the wire ;) I didn't mean to sound like a dick on here, and I really do appreciate the input. I'm sorry for causing any aggravation and I definitely don't like peanut butter whiskey anymore.

Sorry brother. Hopefully you got some good ideas, sometimes the more things people show me the more confused I get and the harder it is to know what I want?.
I would add the quadratec harness for an easy power source, it took me 10-15 mins; wire that to a simple usb or 12v outlet like these:

Then, you can just plug in the usb cord you already have. This is similar to your idea but it would be switched power (instead of the battery) and uhh a little more conventional.
If your cam took 12v power instead of the usb then it may be a little more straight forward tapping into mirror power or something.
Good luck!
