I've been doing winter road trips for decades. I'm getting ready for my next one and putting my packing list together. What do you keep in your vehicle besides your luggage? Here's my list

  1. Sleeping bag - Mine is a 0° bag.
  2. Travel blanket - If I don't need the sleeping bag
  3. Snow shovel - For... snow
  4. Extra winter coat/pants/hat/gloves - In case I need to hike out of wherever I get stranded
  5. First aid kit
  6. Flashlight
  7. Jumper cables
  8. Tool kit
  9. Air compressor
  10. Extra food
  11. A car refrigerator
  12. Recovery gear (straps, shackles, winch controller)
  13. Tire repair kit
  14. Snow chains if I don't have snow rates tires
Thankfully, I've not needed a few of those but I carry them just in case. What else do you pack?

Good list. I like carrying a power station and some extra fuel. Oh and a tarp in case I have to get on the ground for maintenance.

The tarp is a good idea. Power station makes sense too.

In addition to my year-round loadout, I do carry a Winter bag between November and April. We needn't be on a road trip to want to be properly prepared.

Its contents, from memory:
  • Fleece blanket that folds into a pillow
  • Jumper cables (redundancy for lithium jump start pack)
  • Two FMRS walkie talkies w/spare batteries and USB charging base
  • Sealed bottle of electrolyte solution w/expiration date clearly noted
  • Small tarp
  • 3.6K calorie shelf-stable ration bars
  • Tow strap
  • HotHands hand and toe warmer packs
  • Hygiene bag: toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer
  • Foldable entrenching tool
  • Yet another box of ammo, because why not?
  • Maybe 1 or 2 other odds & ends

Why the refrigerator? Isn’t there a way for a weatherproof outside mounted bag where you can keep foods and drinks? It should be cold enough outside to have a similar effect and you get to keep the space for something else, like the aforementioned power station.

ice scraper and can of beer works for me...if it looks like it is going to be really cold an extra pair of flipflops just in case I lose a set in the parking lot...I have done a lot of winter trips going back and forth from Montana to Minnesota or Arizona at christmas time. Christmas should be in the summer time makes traveling easier.....every year we go somewhere usually multiple times a winter...

I have some medical related perishables I take with me. I have a small fridge that holds a tall 6 pack. As long as I have the room, I keep some other stuff. I'll use it to store leftovers from any restaurant stop, and some bottled drinks that are better cold.

For long off-road trips I take my 50qt ARB.

Yeah I go Denver to Iowa to visit family.

I hate airports and over cramped cattle car seating, not to mention how a storm will totally bork all the flights.

I grew up doing road trips so I look forward to the drive. Its a day and a half of solitude before and after the "fun" of dealing with family.

I usually take the Subaru. Driving a lifted Jeep across Nebraska in the winter wind is only slightly less fun than the year I drove the 26' Uhaul.
