What will you be doing differently from the maintenance schedule?

Does your 300s see a lot of dirt and mud trails?
That's what air filters are for. Unless you're flat out rock crawling in 120F heat for 99% of your miles I don't see the need to waste money and resources.

I'll change it when it says its time.

Odds are the people who designed this engine know how to maintain it.

Does the JL have oil monitoring now? I'd imagine it does with all the new FCA tech. My almost 10 year old BMW has an oil monitoring system, there's a sensor in the oil pan that tracks the life/quality, etc. It's a garage queen, probably put 1000 miles a year on it if that, so I change it anyway bi-yearly. It's about $60 just for the oil. I've never actually had it yell at me to change it. Hopefully it works, lol.

edit: Yeah just read it has an oil life indicator in the manual

Yes, there is an oil life indicator in the new JL. I think it is duty cycle based. It's cool that the Bimmer system has an actual sensor. Though I would have thought that their engineering resources would have been better allocated developing a predictive turn signalling system...

Not even BMWs computers can predict the driving "capabilities" of us BMW owners :bandit:

Hey folks, after doing some research, even though FCA claims that the 8-speed automatic transmission fluid is "lifetime", I'm probably going to be going with ZF's recommendation of a fluid change at 100,000 km, which will be just after the powertrain warranty will expire.

I've got more info in another thread I've created here:

Are you sure it’s 100,000 Kilometres not Miles ?
(edit: just read the ZF page, yeah 100,000KMs, but that’s for heavy drving)
“At very high operating temperatures, the oil ages faster than under normal conditions. Depending on the driving style (e.g. many drives at high speeds or sporty driving), ”

So for a lot of off-roading, towing, etc then yeah 100,000KMs.

While it’s no longer in the JL schedule, our GC had the ZF8 as 120,000 miles / 200,000KMs like I mention on the previous page. Even the W5A580/NAG1 schedule in the JK was 100,000 miles (160,000KMs).

Doing it early of course isn’t detrimental, and may be mildly beneficial, but it would essentially double the typical schedule.

In the video they actually say 'between 80,000 km and 120,000 km'. So I'm assuming 80 for severe duty and 120 for light duty.

Weird, seems very early.

But for them it’s their only focus, so of course better early and often so that they can avoid any issues attributable to their product, the way the rare water issue kinda tainted (no pun intended) the reputation of the W5A580 briefly.

Maybe they want to make a little extra money on the fluid too.

I change my own oil and I don't think I can bring myself to put 0W-20 in my new JL. I will probably run 5W-20 or 5W-30. What do you guys think?

I'll be following what the engine manufacturer recommends. I don't see why anyone would choose otherwise. Unless you live in some extreme climate that would warrant a change in oil viscosity.

Exactly. Why wouldn't use what the manufacture states as best for the engine...

Because Jeep says run 5W-20 in the same 3.6 engine in my JK. It's all for CAFE BS. OW-20 looks thinner than water and it gets really hot here. I'm not sure what I am going to use.

I wish that The GreatGrapeApe would give his opinion. He is very knowledgeable and I value his advice.

First, it is not the same 3.6 as in the JK. It has been significantly redesigned, with 0w20 in mind from the start. Secondly, check the flash point on different oils. Mobil 1 0w20 Annual Protection has a flash point of 468 degrees, which is outstanding. Compare that to, say, Pennzoil regular yellow bottle 5w30, which is 421 degrees. So, in that case, the 0w20 will give you the best of both worlds....fuel economy and high temperature protection. I'll be running Mobil 1 AP in mine, and will change the oil once per year. (Probaby 7,000 to 10,000 miles per year).

That flash point for 0w20 AP is even higher than the Mobil 1 5w30 AP, so when the 5w30 goes up in smoke at 450 degrees, the 0w20 will still hold together and have almost 20 degrees margin before it does the same. Folks, that's an amazing oil. That's why I'll run it. That's even better than Mobil 1 15w50!

If you are worried about high temperatures, I've found no better oil that can be run safely in this engine than Mobil 1 AP 0w20. Not only is the flash point higher, as I've shown, but thinner oil dissipates heat MUCH better, especially in an oil cooler, which is standard on the JL 3.6.
